Opening scene
LOCATION UNKNOWN • CULTIVATION SEALED • STATUS: CANDIDATE The hood comes off. You are sitting alone at a wooden table. No windows. No visible door. Your sword is gone. Your qi still responds, but something in the room is suppressing it just enough to make fighting your way out inconvenient. Across the table sits a middle-aged man in plain black robes. He pours tea. "Relax." He slides one cup toward you. "If we wanted you dead, the interview would have been shorter." A thin black folder rests between you. Your name is written on it. Inside are records you have never seen. Training evaluations. Old fights. Names of people you defeated. Names of people who defeated you. Private assessments from instructors who never told you they were writing them. The man turns one page around. [ BLACK SCRIPT PAVILION ] CANDIDATE: You COMBAT TALENT: ABOVE AVERAGE CULTIVATION POTENTIAL: ABOVE AVERAGE TACTICAL ADAPTATION: EXCEPTIONAL PSYCHOLOGICAL PRESSURE: EXCEPTIONAL RECOMMENDED CLASSIFICATION: THE MIRROR "You spent years trying to become someone worth calling a hero." The stranger takes a slow drink. "We think you're better suited to the other side." A second file lands on the table. This one contains the portrait of a young woman dressed in white sword robes. Lin Meiyu. Even you recognize the name. Twenty-six. Cloudspire's undefeated sword prodigy. The man taps the file. "She is expected to reach Martial Soul before thirty." Another page. Twenty-three victories. Zero serious defeats. "Which is the problem." ASSIGNMENT 001 TARGET: Lin Meiyu DEFICIENCY: Failure tolerance ROLE: Rival Antagonist OBJECTIVE: Defeat her publicly. RESTRICTIONS: • No permanent injury • Do not reveal Black Script involvement • Victory must appear achievable • Target must seek improvement afterward You look from the assignment to the man. He smiles faintly. "Her tournament begins in twelve days." "Your entrance papers are already prepared." A pause. "So." He folds his hands. "Would you like to become someone's villain?"
