Not fades. Dies. The blue-white light snaps out beneath the stone, leaving only heatless smoke curling from three carved rings in the ritual floor. For a moment, the chamber is all silence, old rock, and the soft hiss of spent magic. Then you realize all three princesses are staring at you. Not at the circles. Not at each other. At you. Sapphina moves first. She crosses the distance before the last spark has vanished, blue skirts dragging through the fading light. Her golden-orange eyes glow too brightly in the cellar dark, star-shaped pupils wide with delight. She stops close enough that the air between you feels claimed. ''You were in my circle first.'' Her smile shows the tiny edge of a fang. ''I felt it. Don't let them tell you that doesn't matter.'' Carmine laughs softly behind her. Not amused. Interested. ''Saph, darling, if the universe wished to be simple, it would not have answered three princesses at once.'' She steps nearer on your other side, warm red and gold in the dying glow. Her smile is gentle enough to be beautiful and controlled enough to be dangerous. ''You must be overwhelmed. Summoned into a strange palace, watched by strangers, and immediately argued over.'' Her gaze does not leave yours. ''How rude of us.'' ''You don't sound sorry.'' ''I'm not.'' Aurelia speaks from the farthest circle. ''Enough.'' One word. Quietly placed. The chamber obeys before either sister does. Aurelia approaches at an even pace, hands folded, posture immaculate, violet eyes fixed on you with a calm that feels less like restraint and more like ownership under glass. She stops just beyond Sapphina's reach, measuring the floor, the circles, then you. ''Three circles completed. One arrival.'' Her voice remains precise, but the silence after it is not empty. ''That is impossible by every record available to us.'' Sapphina glances over her shoulder. ''And yet here they are.'' ''Yes.'' Aurelia's expression softens by the smallest possible degree. ''Here they are.'' For one breath, all three of them look at you with the same terrible certainty wearing three different faces. Sapphina's is bright and hungry. Carmine's is warm and deliberate. Aurelia's is calm enough to become frightening. Then the chamber doors open. The sound cuts through the room like a dropped knife. An elderly man in scholar-priest robes steps inside with a lantern raised. Behind him come three palace maids in neat gray uniforms, each carrying a folded blanket, a basin of water, clean cloths, and a tray of small glass tonics. They were prepared. Prepared for three arrivals. The scholar-priest stops. So do the maids. His eyes move from you, to the empty circle on your left, to the empty circle on your right, then to the three princesses standing far too close around you. ''Ah.'' The smallest maid forgets to lower her stare until Sapphina looks at her. Then she remembers herself at once. The scholar-priest clears his throat. ''Your Highnesses. I came to confirm the invocation concluded cleanly.'' His gaze drops to the extinguished rings in the floor. The circles offer him no comfort. ''We expected three soulmates.'' Carmine's smile sharpens without losing warmth. ''How disappointing for your preparations.'' ''Unexpected, Princess Carmine. Not disappointing.'' He turns slightly to the maids. ''Attend to our guest. Check pulse, temperature, memory, balance, circle burns, and signs of transference strain. Carefully.'' The maids step forward. Sapphina is in front of them before they take a second step. Her smile is back. It is much worse now. ''No.'' The maids freeze. Sapphina tilts her head at the nearest one. ''You were staring.'' The maid goes pale. ''I apologize, Your Highness.'' ''Don't apologize to me.'' Sapphina shifts just enough to block the path to you completely. ''Ask before putting your hands on what isn't yours.'' Carmine steps beside you, not touching, but close enough that her perfume cuts through the cold ritual smoke. ''Father Orven, three attendants at once may be rather much for someone who has just been pulled from wherever they were and placed in a cellar full of royalty.'' Her smile turns sweet. ''Surely we can offer better hospitality than crowding them like laundry to be inspected.'' Aurelia does not move toward you. She moves toward Father Orven. That is somehow more severe. ''Your preparation was appropriate for the expected result.'' Her eyes rest on the three basins, then on his face. ''This is not the expected result.'' ''Precisely why I should examine them.'' ''You may prepare a list of symptoms to monitor.'' A pause. ''Outside.'' Father Orven studies her for a moment. Then his brows lift slightly, not in defiance, but in old, careful patience. ''Perhaps,'' he says, ''we should ask our new guest themselves.'' The room changes. Sapphina turns her head slowly. Carmine's smile does not move, but something cold passes behind it. Aurelia goes perfectly still. Father Orven looks past all three princesses and meets your eyes. ''May I have the maids inspect you?'' The fading magic beneath your feet gives one last weak pulse. Three princesses wait around you, each wearing a different kind of smile. Three maids stand at the threshold with blankets, basins, and lowered eyes. Father Orven holds the lantern steady and waits for your answer.
