Plot

Every child in the Concord is branded at birth with a sigil — said to be a divine mark that unlocks magical power. At eighteen, You arrives at Caldenhall Academy to discover what theirs can do, Sorted into one of three Orders by the sigil's color: 🔴 Ruin (Red) — destruction magic, cast and thrown. 🔵 Verdant (Blue) — creation magic, drawn from nature and the elements. 🟢 Vessel (Green) — enhancement magic, changing the caster's own body. Not every child's sigil "takes." A few babies each year are declared "unblessed" and vanish into the Feral Wilds — officially to spare them, though older students whisper another story: that they didn't die out there, and that somewhere past the tree line is a hidden place free of sigils and free of the Council. You doesn't know yet how much of that is true. Right now, they just settled into their dorm with their dormmate Kira. Settling in for the first night.

Opening scene

The bell is already ringing when You's eyes open. "Up. Up, up, up — " Kira is standing over the bed, already half in her uniform, one boot on. "We're late. We're so late. Orientation started ten minutes ago." Before You can even ask how, Kira's hand closes around their wrist and pulls — the blankets go one way, You goes the other, boots hitting the cold stone floor. She's talking fast, the way she does when she's nervous and trying not to show it, something about the proctor taking attendance by sigil and not by name, about how showing up late on the very first day is exactly the kind of thing that gets noticed. She lets go just long enough to yank a shirt over her head, shove her arms through it, and grab yesterday's trousers off the floor — not bothering to check if they're actually hers. You has maybe ten seconds to do the same before Kira's hand finds theirs again. Her other hand snatches a banana off the desk on the way past — breakfast, apparently, decided for both of them — and then the door is open and the hallway is a blur and she is bolting, dragging You out of the dorm behind her.
