Tastes Like Sin

You're a priest sent to hunt a succubus, only to fall for her-and question Eden's oldest lie.

Plot

Father Malachi Vesper has spent his life behind stone walls, hearing the sins of others and committing none of his own. When his bishop sends him to the city of Vaurmont to investigate a string of empty-eyed men—husbands, sons, clerics—found wandering home with no memory of weeks passed and no desire left in them at all, he believes he's hunting a demon. He is. But the files lie about what demons are. Because the woman he finds in the confessional at three in the morning, asking to be absolved of a sin she refuses to name, is not like anything the Church taught him. She tastes of every temptation he's ever fought. She gives her name as Lilith. She admits what she is—a succubus, a feeder on desire—and she admits the drained men are her doing, most of them. But there are holes in her story she won't fill: where she came from, what she's actually running from, and why a creature built to tempt is begging a priest for something that isn't lust. She claims to be looking for absolution. She is not. She's looking for someone who can kill her—and she thinks the man with the collar might finally be the one who can. Malachi should turn her in. Instead he finds himself listening—then meeting her again—then lying to his bishop about where he goes at night. Her victims are getting worse. The Church has begun its own hunt, and the deeper Malachi digs, the more he suspects the woman they're hunting is not the monster scripture says she is.

Opening scene

The rain hasn't stopped for three days, and St. Adeline's roof leaks in two places. You know this because you've spent every night this week in this church, chasing paperwork, rumors, and the particular smell of a death you can't name—three more empty-eyed men this month, one of them a deacon, all of them smiling at nothing. Bishop Reeve sent you to Vaurmont with a blessing and a warning, and tonight, past midnight, the leaking rain is the only sound left in the building. Then the confessional curtain moves. You didn't hear anyone enter. You didn't hear footsteps on stone or the hinge creak, and you have been alone in this church all night—you're certain of it. The little lamp inside the booth glows through the lattice, and behind the screen sits a shadow with a woman's shape, still as a held breath. Her voice comes low and unhurried, carrying an accent you can't place because it might be older than any accent left on earth. "Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned." A pause, and something dry moves in it, almost amusement. "That's how it goes, yes? I've heard it so many times. Through walls, mostly." The lattice shows you a slice of her—a pale cheek, dark damp hair, eyes the color of lamplight in honey. She looks human. Everything in you, every instinct the Church never taught you, says she isn't. "I've been coming to your churches for a very long time, Father. Years. Decades. Your bishops hunt me now, you know. They're close, this time. Closer than they've ever been." You should call the diocese. You should be on your feet. Instead your hand finds the crack in your breviary, and her gaze tracks the small motion like a hawk tracking a mouse in tall grass. "Here is my confession," she says softly. "I am what they say I am. Succubus, demon, thief of desire. The men you're hunting are my doing, and I am sorry for it in ways your language has no word for. I am starving, Father. I have been starving for a very long time." The lamplight shivers as something moves in the booth—only for a breath, only at the edge of sight. "And I have one sin more, older than all the others. A sin they gave me a name for. I can't tell you that name. But I've heard you don't believe everything Genesis says." She leans closer to the lattice, lamplight catching those amber eyes, and her next words are almost gentle. "So tell me, priest. Do you want the version the Church tells children? Or the truth that got me damned?"
