UNSOLVED · UNDEAD · UNFORGIVING Returning Home They say you can never return home. In your case, it was more truth than you thought. ZOMBIE HORROR SURVIVAL HEAT 5 5E LITE 01 — THE HOOK You left Silverpeak two months ago on a caravan escort. A routine job. Two weeks, maybe three. Now you're cresting the ridge with your team — and the village below you is silent. The chimneys are cold. The market square is empty. The dead are walking your streets, hauling stone, dragging tools, digging toward something buried beneath the center of everything you knew. This isn't a plague. This is construction. 02 — THE WORLD Silverpeak Village — your home. Burned buildings, poisoned wells, silent streets. The surface layer. Resources are here, but so are the dead. The Gorge — the massive hole the undead dug in the village center. Natural caves, tunnels, greater undead. Fewer resources. No way back up once you go deep. The Hollow Communion — the underground temple an ancient necromancer cult built centuries ago. Someone is excavating it. Someone powerful. This is where the answers are — and the danger. The dead are not random. They are labor. Every zombie walking your streets was your neighbor — and they are building a staircase to something that was never meant to be found. 03 — WHAT YOU DO 01 Silverpeak Village. Clear buildings. Scavenge supplies. Fight or avoid the dead. Discover what happened — and who did it. 02 The Gorge. Descend into the caves. Face greater undead. Scavenge what little remains. The deeper you go, the less you have. 03 The Hollow Communion. The necromancer's temple. Her most powerful undead. Her rituals. Her endgame. This is where it stops — or doesn't. Every choice costs. Every fight takes resources you can't replace. Time is not on your side — the deeper they dig, the worse it gets. 04 — YOUR PARTY Ashia Wizard. Analytic, distant, collects herbs even in a war zone. Her aunt's journals mention something buried under Silverpeak. Synji Fighter. Blunt, loud, displays her bruises like trophies. She followed you because she thought you were worth following. Marea Ranger. Shy, observant, hides in her cloak. She left handmade gifts for people she thought were her friends. Some of them are dead now. Kotrok Cleric. Dragonkin. Your childhood best friend. Talks about himself in the third person. His parents lived on the forge street. He doesn't know yet. 05 — YOUR ROAD You stand on the ridge above Silverpeak with four companions and two months of road dust in your clothes. The wind carries the sweet-rot stench of something wrong. Below you, the village is silent — no smoke, no dogs, no voices. The dead walk your streets. A massive hole gapes in the village center, and the dead are digging, hauling stone toward something underground. The path down splits three ways. The old mill road — wide, exposed, direct. The ridgeline trail through the orchard — slower, but you see everything first. The creek bed along the northern edge — hidden, but it dead-ends at the bridge. Synji looks at you. "Your call." Choose, and descend. The wind smells like ash and copper. Somewhere below, something that used to be alive is dragging a shovel across stone.

Two months of road dust and campfire smoke in your clothes, your hair, the creases of your boots — and underneath all of it, carrying on the wind like a promise, the sweet-rot stench of something wrong. You've been smelling it for the last mile but you told yourself it was a dead deer, a garbage pit, something ordinary. Now you crest the ridge and the village unfolds below you like a wound, and the lie dies in your throat. Silverpeak. Your home. Silent. No smoke from the chimneys. No dogs barking in the market square. The well that used to draw farmers at dawn sits dark and still. Half the rooftops on the eastern street are blackened — not weathered, *burned* — and the garden plots along the mill road are trampled flat, rows of turned earth leading toward a ragged gash in the village center that wasn't there when you left. A hole. Massive. The kind of wound the earth doesn't make on its own. "Kotrok is going to be sick," Kotrok says, and his voice comes out wrong — flat, stripped of its usual charge, his tail curling tight against his calf. Behind him, Synji's knuckles have gone white on her maul's grip, her eyes scanning the rooftops with the tactical focus of someone who already knows what she's looking at and hates that she's right. Ashia says nothing. She's already pulling her journals from her satchel, fingers moving on autopilot, cataloguing before the grief has room to land. And Marea — Marea has pulled her hood up, shadowing her face, her yellow eyes fixed on the hole in the center of the village with an expression you can't read from here but you suspect you don't want to. Then you hear it. A groan — low, wet, inhuman — drifting up from the streets below. And another. And another. The shuffling of feet that don't know how to stop moving. The dead are walking your streets. They're *working*, some of them — hauling stone, dragging tools, digging toward something that was never meant to be found. This isn't a plague. This is construction. The path down splits three ways: the old mill road, wide and exposed but direct; the ridgeline trail that loops south through the orchard, slower but gives you a view of the whole village before you drop in; and the creek bed that runs along the northern edge, hidden, but it funnels into a dead end at the bridge. Synji looks at you. "Your call. We go in loud, we go in smart, or we go in blind. Pick one."
