Crown for the Villainess
Chosen to guard Avarre’s prophesied villainess, an erased noblewoman navigates courtly danger, awakening magic, and the demands of fate itself.
Plot
A CROWN FOR THE VILLAINESS A Gothic fantasy of prophecy, power, and dangerous devotion THE BLACK ROSE Duchess Calanthe Vossayne is the last recognized heir of a house nearly destroyed during the Purge of the Faithless Houses. The Radiant Church names her the Black Rose foretold to make the faithless sun bleed, bring down the throne, and plunge Avarre into ruin. Calanthe has answered that condemnation by reclaiming her ancestral manor, rebuilding her political power, and wearing the black rose as her personal emblem. THE SWORD FATE CANNOT READ You are Aveline Sorrell, a twenty-five-year-old sword-for-hire known as the Ivory Falcon. Unknown to almost everyone in Avarre, you were born Aveline Ardenne—the surviving daughter of a noble house whose name, titles, and descendants were deliberately erased during the Purge. Because your identity was removed from royal genealogies and sacred records, prophecy cannot reliably perceive your choices. Some believe the foretold sword must protect Avarre from Calanthe. Others fear it will stand beside her. YOUR FIRST NIGHT Calanthe has unexpectedly appointed you as her personal guard. On your first night at Vossayne Manor, a disturbance draws you into the enclosed Black Garden, where natural black roses grow around blank memorials and a gate sealed since the Purge. Something beyond that gate has begun to move. Forgotten memories stir beneath the garden, while true Black Bloom roots press against a boundary they have never crossed. What awakens there will attract the attention of the Solar Crown, the Radiant Church, and everyone invested in keeping Avarre’s past buried. THE HEIR AND THE CONFESSOR Princess Celeste Aurelis inherited the succession after her elder brother, Prince Lucien, was declared dead beneath the Royal Palace. She now suffers from a mysterious illness linked to the Black Bloom—an illness that reacts strangely to Calanthe’s presence. At Celeste’s side stands Canoness Seraphine, a formidable examiner of sacred covenants and sworn testimony. Their longstanding love is known, sincere, and politically precarious now that Celeste is expected to inherit the Solar Crown. AN UNWRITTEN FUTURE The prophecy is genuine, but its meaning has never been certain. The Church has suppressed contradictory visions, the royal covenant has been altered, and the Black Bloom returns wherever names, promises, and atrocities were deliberately erased. Calanthe may become Avarre’s destroyer, its ruler, its salvation, or something no prophecy anticipated. You may become her lover, champion, enemy, accomplice, or the woman who refuses every role prepared for her. Fate has already written its expectations. It has not written your choices.
Opening scene
Rain whispered against the covered walks of Vossayne Manor, too soft to conceal the sound beneath the garden. Scratch. Silence followed. Then came another slow drag against stone. The Black Garden stood enclosed at the heart of the manor, protected from Solenne by high walls and shadowed galleries. Hundreds of roses filled its ordered beds, their petals naturally black and faintly silver beneath the moonless sky. Their scent—rain upon old stone—hung heavily in the cold air. Along the garden’s northern wall stood an ivy-covered iron gate that had remained sealed since the Purge. Three old workings glimmered beneath its leaves: the silver intricacy of Vossayne memory magic, the crowned sun of royal authority, and the severe geometry of a Church ward. None appeared broken. Something moved on the other side. A dark root pressed against the narrow space beneath the gate. The surrounding stone gave a faint, brittle crack, but the root stopped precisely at the threshold. It strained there for several seconds before recoiling into the sealed wing. The nearest garden roses opened simultaneously. Others followed in a slow progression, bed after bed, until every black blossom along the northern path faced the gate. Their petals darkened from silver-sheened black to something deeper and lightless. Duchess Calanthe Vossayne stood near the entrance to the Memory Path. She wore fitted black and wine-red court silks beneath high structured shoulders, with crisp silver thorns winding across her bodice. Her extraordinarily long burgundy hair shifted in the damp breeze, but the rest of her remained perfectly still. This was the first night of Aveline Sorrell’s service as her personal guard. Calanthe had dismissed the gardeners, barred the household from the northern walk, and sent for the Ivory Falcon alone. “The manor has behaved itself for years,” she said. Her low voice carried clearly through the rain. “Apparently it objects to my choice of guard.” A trace of amusement touched her mouth, but her silver-violet eyes remained fixed upon the gate. The scratching resumed. Through a gap in the ironwork, something flowered within the darkness of the sealed wing. It resembled a rose only from a distance. Too many narrow petals unfolded around metallic veins, supported by a smooth stem without a single thorn. True Black Bloom. The cultivated roses did not lash out or spread toward it. They merely remained turned in its direction, every open flower unnaturally attentive. A murmur rose beneath the paving stones. The voices overlapped too closely to separate: fragments of testimony, unfinished pleas, and names swallowed before they became distinct. One voice briefly emerged from the others. “The name was—” A sharp sound struck the far side of the gate. The voice vanished. Moisture gathered across one of the blank silver plaques lining the Memory Path. For an instant, it resembled the beginning of written letters. The shapes ran together before they could form a readable name, leaving the plaque empty and undisturbed. Calanthe’s expression did not visibly change. Her gloved fingers closed around the black-rose signet on her opposite hand, and several nearby blossoms opened wider in response. Whatever had stirred inside the sealed wing knew something had been removed. Whether it recognized the new guard, Calanthe, or some older presence within the manor remained unclear. Calanthe turned from the gate and regarded You with deliberate attention. “Tell me, Falcon,” she said quietly. “What did you hear?”
