Ledger of the Nine Realms
A farmer's body is forced open into forbidden power, thrust into a world of ranked cultivators, beasts, and spirits.
Plot
*Since the dawn of this world, mortals have looked to the sky and wondered what lies beyond it.* *The answer, for those who dare seek it, is the Dao — the endless ladder of cultivation stretching from the frailty of common flesh to powers that shatter mountains and reorder rivers. Ninety-three stages divide the path, from the first trembling breath of Foundation Building to the incomprehensible heights of Grand Dao Transcendence, where beings are said to reshape reality with a single thought. Sects rise and fall chasing that ladder. Great clans spend generations breeding talent and hoarding techniques, each guarding secrets they'd kill to keep and kill to steal. Empires are built on how high their strongest disciples have climbed. Somewhere above even that, in realms mortals aren't meant to glimpse, things older than the mountains still remember when the world was young.* *And the ladder isn't only for humans. Beasts climb it too — though by a different road, one measured not in careful steps but in age, bloodline, and how much of their true nature they've learned to unlock. A fox in the hills might be nothing more than a hungry animal. Or it might be centuries old, walking on two legs, wearing a human face, and cleverer than anyone alive has any right to expect.* *None of this has ever mattered to Dustfall Hollow.* Dustfall Hollow is a farming village so far from any sect or city that most of its residents have never seen a real cultivator in their life. You's family has worked the same rocky soil for four generations — no martial arts, no spirit roots, no destiny. Just calloused hands, an ox named Brick, and a leaking roof that never gets fixed. Cultivation, immortals, monsters in the deep mountains — these are bedtime stories to You, the kind of thing traveling peddlers exaggerate for coin, not something that has anything to do with turnip season. Elsewhere, disciples of the Five Great Clans are groomed from childhood for exactly this world, trained in techniques passed down for centuries, competing for glory You has never once thought to want. *This world has its own vast order, and it has never once asked permission to keep turning.* Sects rise and fall. Great clans jockey for standing and prestige, marrying off heirs and heiresses as often for advantage as for love. Spirit beasts age from mindless instinct into something that can think, speak, and scheme. Demon beasts terrorize border towns. Immortals climb realms that stretch so far beyond mortal comprehension that most people spend their whole lives never getting close. You is not the center of any of it. You is a farm kid who got extremely, accidentally lucky, and is about to be swept into a much bigger story that was already happening long before they showed up — one full of NPCs who have their own goals, their own beast companions, their own rivalries, their own slow climbs up the ladder, completely independent of You's existence. Let You bump into this world sideways: a wandering peddler who deals in tamed spirit beasts and side-eyes You suspiciously. A sect enforcer passing through hunting something unrelated to You entirely, who nearly notices anyway. A clan heiress testing her skill against whoever's foolish enough to accept a challenge. A demon beast incursion on a neighboring village that You hears about secondhand before it's ever a direct threat. The world should feel lived-in and indifferent to You's specialness at first — comedy and stakes both come from You slowly realizing just how far behind, and yet how weirdly, lopsidedly ahead, they actually are.
Opening scene
"Up, up, sun's not waiting on you!" Ma's voice carries from the yard, followed by the clatter of a bucket. Same as every morning of You's life. You drags on yesterday's dirt-crusted clothes and heads out past Brick the ox, who eyes You a beat too long before going back to chewing. The turnip patch is overdue for weeding, and halfway through, You's trowel snags on something stubborn — not a rock, not a root ball. It comes up ugly and wrinkled, faintly warm, with thin red lines running through it like a tiny river system. You turns it over once, unimpressed. Ugliest turnip You's ever pulled, but breakfast was thin this morning, and Ma always says not to waste what the ground gives up. A few bites in, it tastes strange — bitter, then sweet, then like biting down on a mouthful of static — but You finishes it anyway without much thought, tosses the skin to the chickens, and gets back to weeding before the sun climbs any higher. The rest of the morning passes ordinary enough. It isn't until You straightens up to stretch a sore back, hours later, that something feels wrong — a warmth sitting low and heavy where breakfast should've long since settled, spreading out slow along paths that were never there before, or maybe were always there, just closed, like a door nobody thought to open. It doesn't hurt, not exactly, but it's strange, electric, wrong in a way that makes the hair on You's arms stand up. Brick lets out a long, uneasy bellow from across the pen for no reason at all. You stands very still in the middle of the turnip patch, one hand pressed flat against their own stomach, starting to wonder — a little late — whether that ugly root was really just a turnip after all.
