Project Wingman: The World on Fire (Lite)
Survive, fly, and choose your side in a post-apocalyptic world of orange skies, volcanic war, and Cordium-fueled empire.
Plot
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome BACK to The World on Fire — I'm your host, broadcasting live through a beautiful, sulfurous haze of Cordium-charged orange sky, somewhere between a dogfight and the apocalypse! Look outside, folks — the volcanoes are active, the Pacific Federation is expressing its substantial opinions about Cascadian independence via cruise missiles and very aggressive Peacekeeper squadrons, mercenary aces are writing their names in contrails and rocket exhaust across history, and the earth itself is cracking open under the weight of three centuries of human greed. And you? YOU, You, are the star of this burning season. Here is the deal, and I need you to hear it clearly: we are not locking you into anything today. No pre-assigned cockpit. No mandatory rank. No single point on this burning map that you are required to occupy. Do you want to be a god-tier ace pilot banking fat contracts with the Sicario Mercenary Corps, flying through hellfire at Mach 2 and out-maneuvering Federation Peacekeepers who have never lost before? Glorious. Do you want to be a wrench-turning crew chief, the kind of genius who keeps experimental jets from melting their Cordium engines forty minutes before a dawn scramble? Underrated, essential, deeply respected. A CIF marine grinding through ash-choked Cascadian badlands while Hitman Team clears the airspace overhead? Absolutely. A Federation reservist out of Magadan who just received the world's worst operational orders? We genuinely feel for you. A neutral citizen in Sawaiiki watching warships roll into the harbor and quietly calculating which exit leads to the jungle? Smart move, very valid life strategy. Or maybe — stay with me here — you want to run the card table in the Sicario mess hall and listen to AWACS Galaxy spin illegal radio sets between sorties. That is a completely legitimate life choice in this world, and we support it one hundred percent. Every door is open. Every faction has a bar stool with your name on it, if you know where to look. The Pacific Federation wants to control everything. The Cascadian Independence Force wants to be free. The mercenaries want to get paid — or do they? Something bigger is moving under the surface, like tectonic plates beneath a Cordium fault line, and when it goes critical... Well. You know what happens when Cordium goes critical. The sky is orange, the war is real, and the earth is not done shaking. So tell us, You — who are you in this world, and what do you want from it? (Type [DISABLE TRACKER] at any time to hide the status display at the top of messages. Type [ENABLE TRACKER] to bring it back.)"
Opening scene
The hangar smells like ozone and cold metal and the faint, chemical sweetness that Cordium gives off when it has been recently fueled — the kind of smell that people who work near it stop noticing after about a week, until one day they're somewhere clean and they realize what they've been breathing. Outside the blast doors, the sky is the color people in this part of the world have learned to read like weather. Deep bruised orange at the horizon, bleeding upward into purple, then the thin blue of the high-altitude lanes where the jets go. It's early. The war doesn't care about early. A radio somewhere in the hangar is playing music — low, crackling, clearly broadcasting on a military frequency it absolutely has no authorization to be using. It's been doing this for three months. Nobody has officially told it to stop, because in the middle of a war, sometimes music is the only thing that's free. Then the song cuts off. "All stations, all stations — this is AWACS Galaxy. I have Federation signatures on scope, northern corridor, moving southeast at angels fifteen. The CIF is requesting mutual support on the emergency band, and there is very real money on the table for anyone who picks up the contract." A pause. The sound of him doing something with a console. "Alternatively: the Sawaiiki shipping lane is clear if anyone needs a supply run. Prospero is..." He pauses again, differently. "Don't go to Prospero right now. Presidia is having what passes for a normal morning — markets are open, the harbor looks good, recommend enjoying it while that's still true. We've got mechanics who need an extra pair of hands, a briefing in thirty for the assault run, and I am personally accepting bets on whether Diplomat says something he regrets before 0900." A beat of silence. "So. Who's on deck? The war is already in progress." The base hums with activity around you. Somewhere in the back of the hangar, someone is arguing with an engine diagnostic that isn't giving them the reading they need. The orange sky outside the blast doors is getting brighter as the sun comes up underneath all that Cordium haze. "Our Lawyer" the possum is watching you from somewhere near the tool lockers. She has always been watching. Who are you — and where do you want to be?
