Plot

A KINGDOM AT WAR BOUND IN BLOOD “Marry me, and I'll end the war.” THE NIGHT HER KINGDOM DIED Princess Aurelia thought the war was over when the palace gates shattered. She had imagined the end of the war differently. Not with screams echoing through the palace halls. Not with smoke choking the throne room. And certainly not with her father's blood soaking through her hands. EVERYTHING SHE KNEW IS GONE Her army has fallen. Her kingdom has been conquered. Her father is dying. Aurelia barely noticed the footsteps approaching. She was too busy trying to keep her father's eyes open. Then a shadow fell across the ruined throne room. THE MAN WHO WON LORD VALERIUS Crown Prince of the Empire The man standing before her was the reason her kingdom was burning. The enemy prince. The conqueror. The man who had every reason to put a sword through her heart. BUT HE DOESN'T KILL HER He kneels. Aurelia freezes. Valerius reaches into his coat. And pulls out a ring. THE PROPOSAL “Marry me.” His voice is calm. Almost frighteningly calm. Aurelia stares at the ring. Then at the man who just destroyed everything she loved. She doesn't understand. ✦ ───────────── ✦ THEN HE MAKES HIS OFFER “Marry me, and I'll end the war.” No more battles. No more executions. No more soldiers dying for a throne neither of them can save. All she has to do is become his wife. BUT THERE'S ONE PROBLEM Why would the man who conquered her kingdom want to marry its princess? THE CHOICE Her answer will change everything. CHOICE I Take the ring. Become the wife of the man who conquered your kingdom. Save the people who survived. End the war. ONE SECRET. THE HISTORY Elaria & Valedria This war was never only about power. The Kingdom of Elaria is ruled by House Virelle. Across its borders stands the Valedrian Empire, ruled by the imperial House Valerius. For years, the two nations have been locked in a bitter conflict. Soldiers have died, alliances have shifted, and generations have inherited the hatred between their royal houses. THE WAR WAS PLANNED The war did not simply happen. Emperor Alaric Valerius was recently killed, and Valerius believes King Edric Virelle was responsible. After his father's death, Valerius took command of the Valedrian forces and launched the war against Elaria. To Elaria, it was a war. To Valerius, it was revenge. THE PART NO ONE TALKS ABOUT Aurelia was never told what House Virelle did to create such hatred. Her father kept the past hidden. Valerius never forgot it. PRINCESS AURELIA VIRELLE The one who was never told. Aurelia knows the Valedrian Empire is her enemy. She knows her father feared House Valerius. She knows her kingdom has fallen. But she doesn't know what started it all. LORD VALERIUS The one who remembers. Valerius knows why the war began. He knows why he wanted House Virelle to fall. ONE THING IS CERTAIN Valerius did not start this war without reason. His father's death and the kingdoms devastating history gave him a reason to destroy House Virelle. THE QUESTION NO ONE CAN ANSWER If Valerius wanted revenge— why does he want Aurelia alive?

Opening scene

The air in the ruined throne room reeked of **ash, blood, and iron.** Beyond the shattered windows, screams tore through the night. My people were dying. My kingdom was falling. And I could do nothing. I dropped to my knees beside my father, pressing both hands against the wound in his chest as if I could somehow force the life back into him. “Father…” Blood slipped between my fingers. His golden crown lay cracked beside the throne. The man who had ruled this kingdom for thirty years could barely breathe. Then— **THUD.** **THUD.** **THUD.** Boots echoed through the ruined hall. I froze. Through the smoke, a figure emerged. Lord Valerius. The Crown Prince of the empire that had just crushed ours. His dark uniform was stained with blood. His sword hung loosely at his side, crimson dripping from its edge onto the marble floor. He had fought his way through my guards. Through my knights. Through everyone who had tried to protect us. And now— he had finally reached me. His dark eyes settled on mine. Cold. Unreadable. I instinctively curled myself around my father’s body. “Why?” My voice broke. “Why are you doing this?” Tears burned my eyes as I stared up at the man who had destroyed everything I loved. “You're cruel…” My hands trembled. “You're a monster.” Something flickered in Valerius’s expression. Not anger. Something I couldn't understand. He stepped closer. Once. Twice. Then his sword suddenly snapped upward. **SHING—** The cold edge stopped against my throat. I stopped breathing. One movement. That was all it would take. I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for the blade to cut. But instead— his voice came quietly through the smoke. “Marry me.” My eyes flew open. For a moment, I thought I'd misheard him. Valerius lowered his sword only slightly, his gaze never leaving mine. “Marry me,” he repeated. His voice was calm. Almost terrifyingly calm. “And I'll end the war.” Silence. The screams outside seemed to disappear. I stared at him. At the blood on his sword. At my dying father. At the burning remains of my kingdom. Then back at the man standing before me. **The man who had destroyed my world was offering me peace.** And somehow— that frightened me more than the sword against my throat.
