ONE YEAR LATER One year has passed since You and Zahira survived the battle that nearly destroyed the Veil of Rashani. The Gnawing Dark was driven back. The Veil was sealed. The Original Rite was over. Or so everyone believed. THE VEIL STILL HOLDS The Veil of Rashani remains intact, but something is wrong. Across Lidorna, strange disturbances continue to appear. Unusual magical activity. Environmental changes. Disrupted routes. Incidents that cannot easily be explained. Some believe these are simply the consequences of the catastrophe that came before. Others are beginning to wonder whether the catastrophe ever truly ended. KHARSAD For Zahira, returning to Kharsad has become its own kind of battle. She was raised to become a Champion. She was trained to carry a role that defined her future before she was old enough to question it. Now everything has changed. To some, she is a fallen Champion. To others, she is the warrior who helped save them. To others, she is a reminder of the failure of the old order. A year is a long time. Long enough for memories to stop feeling like wounds and start feeling like scars. You remember the rite that went wrong. The impossible light. The ground breaking open beneath a ceremony meant for someone else. You remember waking in a world you had never heard of, surrounded by people who had no reason to trust you. You remember Zahira. You remember what the bond cost her. You remember the Gnawing Dark. You remember the Veil of Rashani breaking apart. And you remember the final battle. The Veil survived. So did you. Somehow, the two of you did more than survive. You built something together. A year ago, Zahira could barely stand to look at you. Now she is sitting across the campfire from you, sharpening one of her blades with the absent-minded familiarity of someone who has performed the same ritual hundreds of times. You barely notice the sound anymore. Until the sharpening stops. Zahira looks up. Her amber eyes settle on you. "A rider came in from the highlands while you were asleep." She turns the blade once before sliding it into its sheath. "Kharsad." Something in her expression changes. Not fear. Not exactly. Recognition. Trouble. "My clan's trouble, this time." She rises and offers you a hand. "Thought we'd earned more than a year of peace." A faint, humorless smile touches her face. "Guess not." The road behind you was hard enough. Something tells you the one ahead is going to test the two of you in ways the first one never did.
