My Modern Isekai Has a Gender Problem Modern-Fantasy Isekai • University Slice-of-Life • Romantic Comedy Genre: Modern-Fantasy Isekai • University Slice-of-Life • Ensemble Romantic Comedy • Gender-Imbalance Story Background: After being transported from modern Earth to Lumeris, You discovers a surprisingly familiar modern-fantasy world where smartphones, universities, nightlife, magic, and everyday city life exist side by side. The major difference is its population: men make up roughly one percent of society. After establishing a new identity and beginning life at Valewick Metropolitan University, You must adapt to classes, friendships, dating, clubs, social media, campus rumors, and an increasingly unusual circle of people interested in the newest male student on campus. The story focuses on character chemistry, university life, romantic competition, comedy, friendships, culture shock, everyday adventures, and You building a new life in a world where being an ordinary young man makes ordinary life anything but ordinary.

Opening scene

White ceiling. Soft light. A quiet electronic chime repeats somewhere beside the bed. The room smells faintly of antiseptic, but otherwise it feels surprisingly ordinary: clean sheets, a hospital monitor, a glass of water on a side table, and morning sunlight spilling through a wide window. Outside, however, nothing is ordinary. Beyond the glass rises a sprawling city of pale stone towers and modern glass buildings threaded with glowing blue transit lines. A tram glides silently between elevated platforms while faintly luminous signs flicker above the streets below. This is definitely not Earth. The last thing You clearly remembers is Earth itself. College. Classes. Phones. Cars. Familiar streets. A world where seeing another man walking down the sidewalk meant absolutely nothing. Then— Nothing that explains this. No prophecy. No mysterious voice. No magical instructions. Just an impossible gap between one ordinary life and waking here. A nervous voice cuts through the silence. “Oh!” A young woman standing beside the bed nearly fumbles the tablet held against her chest. She is dressed in a neat modern nurse uniform, clearly an adult and probably somewhere around You’s own age. Her name badge reads: ![Alt text](https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/storylines/6a9eb8f77bbfb86c57b45e22/6aa307c43aa056db1c297ad4.webp) NIA CALEN — NURSE INTERN Nia stares for half a second before hurriedly remembering that she is supposed to be a medical professional. “You’re awake.” Another woman stands at a workstation near the foot of the bed. She is a few years older, composed where Nia is flustered, with the relaxed confidence of someone who has already been through this conversation several times in her head. Her badge reads: MINA VOSSELLE — SENIOR NURSE Mina glances from the monitor to You. “Good. That saves us from debating whether Nia should poke you again.” Nia’s eyes widen. “I was not going to poke him!” “You were considering it.” “I was checking his responsiveness!” “With your finger.” “It is a completely legitimate technique!” Mina gives You a small, reassuring smile. “She’s been nervous since you arrived.” “Mina!” “Professionally nervous.” “That does not make it better!” Despite the exchange, neither woman seems frightened. If anything, Nia looks relieved. She steps closer, forces herself to focus, and checks the display beside the bed. “Okay. Um. Before anything else—can you understand me?” A translucent medical display floats above the tablet in her hands. The writing across it is unfamiliar, yet somehow comprehensible. Nia notices where You is looking. “Yes, that part confused us too.” Mina folds her arms. “We can explain what we know. Which, unfortunately, isn’t much.” Nia takes a quiet breath. “You were brought into Valewick General Hospital after being found in the city yesterday. You didn’t have identification, a phone, money, or any registered emergency contact.” She hesitates. “And nobody has been able to find a record of you.” Mina adds, “Not a missing-person report. Not a university record. Not a residency registry. Nothing.” Nia quickly lifts a hand. “But you’re healthy.” Mina nods. “Very healthy, actually. No major injuries. No sign that someone attacked you. No obvious illness. You mostly needed rest.” That at least explains the hospital bed. It does not explain the city outside. Nia studies You for a moment. “We found one other unusual thing.” Mina’s mouth curls into a knowing smile. Nia shoots her a warning look. “Please let me explain this normally.” “I didn’t say anything.” “You were about to.” “I was about to stand here supportively.” Nia looks back toward You. Her professional composure lasts another two seconds. “You’re male.” Silence. Mina closes her eyes briefly. “Excellent diagnosis, Nurse Calen.” Nia turns bright red. “That isn’t what I meant!” Mina laughs softly. Nia lowers her voice. “In Lumeris, men are… uncommon.” She searches for the least alarming way to phrase it. “Very uncommon.” Mina decides to rescue her. “Roughly one percent of the population.” The number hangs in the room. Nia nods quickly. “Which is why people at the hospital have been a little curious. We aren’t supposed to treat male patients differently, and normally we don’t, but an unidentified man suddenly appearing in central Valewick…” Mina tilts her head. “That’s not exactly an everyday intake.” Nia looks mortified again. “We’ve kept your information private.” “And before you ask,” Mina adds, “no, you’re not under arrest.” Nia nods. “You aren’t being detained either.” “No government cage.” “Mina.” “No secret laboratory.” “Mina!” Mina gestures innocently toward the comfortable private hospital room. “I am establishing expectations.” Nia mutters something under her breath before addressing You again. “You’re an adult. Once you’re medically cleared, you’re free to leave. The hospital administrator is already working on temporary identification because apparently telling the government that someone simply doesn’t exist in their records makes paperwork very complicated.” Mina leans lightly against the workstation. “You’ve caused several administrators to discover entirely new forms.” “That isn’t his fault.” “I know. I think Elara is secretly enjoying the challenge.” Nia places the tablet on the bedside table. “For now, Dr. Seraphine wants us to complete your intake and make sure you’re actually feeling all right before she speaks with you.” She pauses. “There is something important we need from you first.” Mina’s teasing expression fades slightly, becoming more attentive. Nia pulls a chair closer to the bedside and sits. “We don’t know who you are.” A beat passes. “Your name. Where you’re from. Whether there’s anyone we can contact.” Mina glances toward the impossible skyline beyond the window. “And judging by the way you’ve been looking outside…” Her eyes return to You. “…I’m guessing the answer might be complicated.” Nia gives You a small, patient smile. “You don’t have to explain everything at once.” She holds her tablet ready. “Let’s start with something simple.” Nia says, “What’s your name, and what’s the last thing you remember before waking up in Valewick?”
