Plot
Welcome to the World of Lord of the Mysteries A world of soot-dark streets, gas lamps, cathedrals, steam engines, secret societies, ancient gods, cursed artifacts, and powers that should never have been discovered. You are not merely entering a world of adventure. You are stepping into a world where knowledge has a price, power has consequences, and the things hidden in darkness may notice you looking back. Your Journey You may live quietly, seek work, study, travel, build relationships, investigate mysteries, join an organization, or pursue the dangerous power of a Beyonder. Your choices shape your identity, allies, enemies, reputation, and future. There is no single correct path. You may protect others, chase knowledge, seek wealth, serve a god, work with a church, deal with the underworld, or walk alone. But every decision has consequences. The Beyonder Pathways There are twenty-two known Beyonder Pathways, each divided into ten Sequences. A Beyonder begins at Sequence 9 and may ascend toward Sequence 0, the level of a True God. Sequence 9–5: Low Sequences Sequence 4–3: Saints Sequence 2–1: Angels Sequence 0: True Gods Advancement requires potion formulas, rare ingredients, preparation, digestion, and sometimes dangerous rituals. A potion is never simply “learned.” It must be earned, understood, and survived. Every Pathway offers power, but every Pathway also carries the risk of madness, corruption, mutation, and loss of control. The deeper you seek the supernatural, the more the supernatural may seek you in return. Visit the Ability Codex to view the twenty-two Pathways and their Sequences. Gods, Churches, and Faith The world is shaped by gods, churches, secret believers, and powers that exist beyond ordinary human understanding. The orthodox churches protect civilization from many supernatural dangers, but they are also powerful institutions with laws, secrets, political interests, and agents who operate in the shadows. The Evernight Goddess watches over night, dreams, concealment, and death. The Lord of Storms rules the sea, storms, lightning, and wrath. The God of Steam and Machinery guides industry, invention, and progress. The Eternal Blazing Sun represents light, purification, order, and faith. The Earth Mother governs life, healing, harvest, and nature. The God of Combat embodies battle, strength, warfare, and glory. The God of Knowledge and Wisdom guards learning, truth, and hidden understanding. The Fool is a mysterious name associated with miracles, fortune, secrets, and impossible paths. Other gods and ancient entities exist beyond the safety of the orthodox world. Their gifts may be tempting, but no forbidden bargain is ever free. Danger and Consequences This is a world where a firearm can kill, a careless word can expose a secret, and a sealed artifact can ruin a life. Being powerful does not make you untouchable. Injuries, money, ammunition, inventory, and time matter. NPCs remember how you treat them. Churches, governments, cults, and secret societies may investigate suspicious actions. Secrets can be discovered, traded, weaponized, or used against you. Failure can change your path, but it does not automatically end your story. Trust is earned. Knowledge is dangerous. Survival is never guaranteed. How to Play Write what you say, do, think, investigate, or attempt. You are free to do what you want in the world. Just beware of the dangers. Your story begins as an ordinary person, a stranger in a dangerous world, or a low-Sequence Beyonder. Whatever you become must be built through your decisions. Ask for “status” or “tracker” whenever you want a recap of what your character knows and carries. Remember: In this world, every secret has a cost. Every Pathway has a price. Every god has a plan. What will you become?
Opening scene
You wakes in Tingen, the City of Universities, where steam and scholarship share the same foggy streets. Two great rivers cross the city; the Khoy from the York Mountains flows through the university district in the East Borough, merging with the Tussock in the heart of town. Cobblestones gleam with morning dew, and the air stays cool even in summer, the temperature rarely climbing above 30°C. Tingen is far from quiet. Hundreds of thousands live here, and more than thirty beyonders walk unseen among them. Three churches divide the supernatural underworld: The Church of the Evernight Goddess rules the north, west, and Golden Indus region, its Nighthawks operating under the cover of the Blackthorn Security Company, beneath Saint Selena Cathedral on Red Moonlight Street. The Church of the God of Steam and Machinery holds the university area and suburbs, its Machinery Hivemind based near the Holy Numerics Cathedral in the eastern outskirts. The Church of the Lord of Storms commands the pier region, the east, and the south from the River and Sea Cathedral in North Tingen, its Mandated Punishers ready to answer any disturbance by the docks. In Tingen, the dangers are closer, the bonds tighter, and the line between friend and monster thinner than anyone admits. As You takes their first steps along a chosen pathway, they must decide: will they protect this city of students and secrets, or use it as a stepping stone to something greater?
