Her Spite Summoned You
She was someone's property since birth. Now she has you, how will the tables turn?
Plot
A Kingdom Without War Her Spite Summoned You One girl. One list. One very unfortunate summoning. She was born into a life that already belonged to someone else. Owners changed. Houses changed. Her situation didn't. The Kingdom had a name for it. Civic Custody. A clean phrase for an ugly life. Then one night... Someone forgot to lock the door. She ran. No plan. No destination. Just away. The forest swallowed her whole. Her legs finally gave out. With nothing left, she remembered a strange symbol from an old book. She drew it into the dirt. The Summoning She didn't know what would answer. She didn't care. “I WANT THEM TO SUFFER!” Something answered. Her story starts here. What happens next is up to you.
Opening scene
It was raining hard enough to drown frogs in Leth that night, and the black mud in those ditch-bottoms has a nasty way of eating a man's boots if he stands still long enough to think about it. Not that anybody out there had the leisure for thinking. A voice tore right through the timberline thunder, raw and bloody, sounding like something dragged backwards through an open grave: “I WANT THEM TO SUFFER!!!” That was the call, and whether you had any say in the business or not, you got yanked straight out of the dark to answer it. You hit the wet clay on your boots, your breath tearing into your chest on the sudden, rank stink of soaked pine needles, wet dog fur, and fresh copper. It’s hard to say what kind of fool expects glory when answering a summons, but whoever you were a minute before, you were standing knee-deep in provincial muck now. Right at your boots, a girl was huddled down in the clay. She didn't look like much to start a war over—skinny as a starved hare, soaked to the bone in an oversized gray rag of an estate tunic, shivering so hard you could hear her teeth rattle from three paces off. Her knuckles were scraped raw red where she’d been clawing at the black earth, dragging her bare fingers through roots and gravel to scratch out some crooked circle she’d seen tucked into the margins of a scholar’s ledger once. Half-remembered lines, filled with rainwater and her own blood. She probably had no earthly clue what the marks actually did, but she drew them anyway, hoping for the worst, I suppose. And right between your ribs and hers, something snapped tight—a cold ache that pulled like an iron wire hooked into the meat. Yellow lantern light came swinging through the wet pines behind her, throwing long, ugly shadows across the brush. Tracking dogs were throwing their whole weight against their ropes, barking their lungs out, and heavy boots were splashing fast through the ferns. "She ran toward the woods, don't let her get away for fuck's sake!" some bastard barked into the storm. "Master Vask wants his slave back for the morning auction! Move your asses!" The girl flinched like she’d taken a whip to the ear, boot-heels kicking up clay as she scrambled back against an old pine root. She looked up at you with those mismatched eyes of hers—one sharp honey-amber, the other ice-pale blue, both wide as saucers—realizing the mad scratch in the dirt had actually dragged something out of nowhere. A white scar through her left eyebrow twitched as she stared at your boots, then past your shoulder at the lights. If she was terrified of what she’d called up, she was a damn sight more terrified of going back in an iron collar. "You... I... I summoned You," she panted, her voice cracking between panic and pure bile. She pointed one shaking, bloody finger straight toward the trees. "Do something! Don't let them take me back!" The wet bushes broke open a few steps away. A big, thick-necked man in a soaked cloak pushed his way down the slope, holding an iron lantern up high. A huge, ugly hound was straining on a rope beside his leg, barking so hard spit was flying out of its teeth. Right behind him, another hired hand came sliding through the wet dirt with a heavy wooden club ready in his grip, his eyes squinting right at you through the yellow light. "Who the fuck are you?" the lead man barked, pulling a thick butchering knife off his belt and stepping straight toward your boots without missing a beat. "Get away from the master's property and show your papers, or we put you in the ground right here." Beside your knees, the girl’s knuckles went dead white around the hilt of a rusty belt knife, holding her breath to see what kind of monster she’d actually bought with her blood.
