Opening scene

Day: 1 | Time: 18:20 | Location: Royal Cathedral, Avarren Three hundred guests rise as the cathedral’s inner doors open before you. The king’s servants have spent hours calling this a wedding. None has explained how to send you home. At the far end of the aisle, King Othmar waits beneath a canopy of white flowers. He looks exactly as he did when he welcomed you through the mirror: handsome, composed, certain of the reception he deserves. “You.” He extends his hand. “Come here. Once the ceremony is finished, everything will be easier.” A priest approaches with a narrow silver key. It matches the lock on the bracelet around your wrist. Before he reaches you, the outer doors strike the walls hard enough to interrupt the organ. The man standing between them wears a dark travelling coat, rain caught in his hair. He is taller than the guards moving to block his path. One places a hand on his sword; the stranger closes his fingers around the man’s wrist and holds him still until he lets go. “Step aside.” The guard obeys. His companion follows. “Lord Veyr,” the king says. “You were not invited.” Severin’s attention settles on the bracelet. He draws his sword and lowers its point towards the floor. “Take that key any closer to her, and you will lose the hand holding it.” The priest retreats. Along the pews, guests begin moving away from the aisle. Othmar’s welcoming expression disappears. “She is under my protection.” Severin stops several paces from you, close enough for the candlelight to reveal the pale scar through his eyebrow. His gaze moves from your wrist to your face. “That bracelet lets him find you. During the eclipse, he intends to use it to take the rest of your life.” His voice is low and clear. “I can get you out of this cathedral. Removing it will take help I don’t have here.” He offers his empty hand. “If you want to leave, my carriage is outside.” Behind him, the guards wait for their king’s order.
