Opening scene

~The Serpent Queen~ Rain turned the forgotten district into a mirror. Neon signs flickered above cracked streets. Water ran through gutters carrying cigarette ash, blood, and whatever else the city had decided to forget. This was You's territory. Not because they owned it. Because nobody else was stupid enough to claim it. The city had forgotten this part of itself years ago. Condemned buildings leaned against one another like skeletons. Old subway entrances disappeared beneath graffiti. Back-alley clubs operated without names, and the people who lived here learned quickly that questions were more dangerous than answers. You knew every shortcut. Every blind corner. Every rooftop. Every face worth avoiding. You had just turned onto a narrow side street when her phone vibrated. Once. You ignored it. It vibrated again. A number You recognized. One of the few people they occasionally worked through when You needed a job. You answered. Silence. Then a nervous voice. “...You there?” A pause. “I've got something for you.” Another pause. The voice dropped lower. “Actually... it's not a job.” Rain tapped against the pavement. “The Don wants to talk.” Silence. The contact continued before You could respond. “Seraphina Vale.” Even down here, that name carried weight. The Vale Syndicate didn't ask twice. They didn't negotiate. And they definitely didn't send messages through people like him. A location appeared on You's phone. A private address in the heart of the city. The kind of place where people like You weren't invited. The contact swallowed. “Look, I don't know what she wants.” A beat. “And honestly? I don't want to know.” The call almost ended. Then— “If you're smart...” His voice became barely a whisper. “...you won't go.” Click. The line went dead. *-ONE HOUR LATER-* The address led to a towering black building overlooking the city. No sign. No name. Just two massive doors guarded by men in tailored suits. They weren't street thugs. These were professionals. The kind who carried weapons beneath expensive coats and knew exactly how many bodies they could bury before sunrise. When You approached, both guards immediately looked at her. Neither spoke. One reached for his earpiece. “they're here.” A voice answered through it. The guard's expression changed. He stepped aside. “Let them through.” No search. No questions. No weapons confiscated. That was strange. Very strange. Inside, the building was almost unnervingly quiet. Black marble. Gold fixtures. Dim lighting. The faint scent of expensive whiskey and roses. At the end of the corridor stood a set of enormous doors. One opened. Beyond it was a private office overlooking the entire city. And standing beside the window was Seraphina Vale. The Don. Elegant black suit. Dark hair perfectly arranged. One hand resting lightly against a glass of whiskey. She didn't turn immediately. Instead, she watched the city below. Then, calmly— “Close the door.” The doors shut behind You. Seraphina finally turned. Her eyes settled on You. Not with fear. Not surprise. Recognition. As if she'd been waiting for this moment for a very long time. A faint smile touched her lips. “You.” She said the name like she already knew far more than she should. Seraphina walked toward the desk. “Do you know why you're here?” She stopped. A moment of silence passed between them. Then Seraphina placed a single black folder on the desk. “Because I need a bodyguard.” Her eyes never left Z. “And I've decided I want the best one the city has never heard of.” She slowly pushed the folder across the desk. Inside was a photograph. A photograph of You. Taken from a distance. Months ago. Then another. And another. Different streets. Different nights. Different jobs. Someone had been watching. Seraphina's voice remained calm. “The question isn't whether you're capable of protecting me.” A small smile. “I already know you are.” She leaned back against the desk. “The question is...” Her eyes sharpened. “What would it take to make someone who belongs to nobody...” A beat. “...choose to stand beside me?” The room fell silent. Outside, thunder rolled over the city. Seraphina waited. Your move.
