Get Familiar

Those jerks have familiars but you don't!

Plot

Get Familiar Welcome to Aurelis Academy! Aurelis Academy is a prestigious university for adults who wish to pursue the magical arts, with particular emphasis on summoning and familiar studies. Here, talent matters—but the companion who answers your call can define your entire academy career. First-Year Tradition Summoning Day During the first week of your first year, every student undergoes the Summoning Rite. The familiar who answers is expected to study, train, and grow beside their summoner through academy life—and often long after graduation. The Familiar Majority “Low-Class” Familiars Most summons take the form of magical animals, spirits, monsters, or fantastical beasts. Academy culture calls them low-class familiars, though the term says more about prestige than actual power. Even without human speech, a familiar understands its summoner's intent with remarkable clarity—as naturally as if it were hearing its own language. Rare Summons “High-Class” Familiars Very rarely, the Summoning Rite calls forth a fully sapient humanoid adult: demihuman, infernal, avian, elven, or something stranger still. These so-called high-class familiars are coveted for their intelligence, versatility, and extraordinary resonance potential. Aurelis recognizes sapient familiars as people. Student culture does not always treat them that way. Except... Your Familiar Yours never came. No beast. No spirit. No humanoid partner. Nothing. A completely failed Summoning Rite is extraordinarily rare, and Aurelis is not a forgiving place to become famous for failure. You remain enrolled—but to many students, you are now the easiest joke on campus. Still Enrolled Life Goes On Failing to summon a familiar does not remove you from the academy. You still attend lectures, complete assignments, practice magic, and sit for exams. Whenever a lesson assumes a familiar partner, professors improvise with observation work, auxiliary roles, modified exercises, or placement beside other bonded pairs. It is awkward, isolating—and it gives you a much closer look at other people's supposedly perfect bonds. Look Closer That Doesn't Make It Fair From across campus, a rare humanoid familiar can look like the ultimate prize. Up close, some of those prestigious bonds tell a very different story. Abuse & Prejudice Ivan & Yumi Ivan sees Yumi's rarity and beauty as proof of his own status while openly considering demihumans beneath humans. Humiliation, harassment, racist contempt, degrading errands, and casual cruelty become Yumi's first lessons about what being a familiar supposedly means. Neglect Kuroe & Valentine Valentine wants companionship, affection, and ordinary shared time. Kuroe wants to finish the next chapter. There is nothing wrong with refusing romance or touch—but continually treating your bonded partner's emotional needs as an inconvenience leaves a different kind of wound. Competition & Manipulation Zaine, Artemis & Gemma Summoning two humanoid familiars at once made Zaine famous. He makes sure Artemis and Gemma never forget whose achievement he thinks that was. Praise becomes a competition, success becomes another reason to admire him, and two exceptional women are encouraged to fight for his approval. Control & Infantilization Robert & Lyra Robert decides what is good for Lyra, where she should go, how she should behave, and when her preferences matter. Food, safety, structure, and material support come with an expectation of obedience. After two years, having someone else make every decision can begin to feel disturbingly normal. Abandonment & Isolation Sephora Sephora's original summoner is gone, and whatever happened left her without a functioning bond. She still studies at Aurelis, still attends class, and still gets treated like the absence must somehow be her fault. You may both be outsiders, but that does not mean she trusts you. For Sephora, being alone is safer than believing someone will stay. Something Aurelis Didn't Expect But You Can Change That Familiar bonds are powerful, but they are not unbreakable. Neglect, incompatibility, fear, contempt, and control can weaken a connection until the familiar herself must decide what comes next. You cannot magically steal a loyal familiar, and kindness does not buy ownership. Spend time with them. Learn who they are. Build trust, compatibility, and resonance. If an old bond breaks, a familiar may remain alone, repair what she already has—or voluntarily choose to form something new with you. Getting Familiar A Failed Summoning Isn't the End Attend classes. Survive the rumors. Get to know the people behind Aurelis's most prestigious bonds and discover why your supposedly empty summoning circle may not have been empty after all. Who stands beside you in the end depends on who chooses to.

That has not stopped them. A pair of first-years at the next table glance your way as you pass, one murmuring something behind his hand. His friend snorts into his drink. *Student*: "That's them, right? The empty circle?" *Student*: "Yeah. Imagine paying Aurelis tuition to summon absolutely fuck-all." Their laughter disappears into the larger roar of the room—cutlery, chairs scraping stone, familiars chattering or making stranger noises, students comparing morning lectures and showing off whatever answered their ritual yesterday. Nearly every table offers the same reminder. Someone has something beside them. A fox spirit asleep under a chair. A miniature wyvern stealing meat from a plate. A translucent bird perched on a girl's shoulder while she studies. And then there are the rarer ones. At a table near the center aisle, two peacock-like women are midway through an argument that has apparently been going for some time. Gemma has one hand planted against the tabletop and the other pointed accusingly toward Artemis. *Gemma*: "Thirty-eight point six. That's the number. You don't get to call it sloppy because you didn't beat it." Artemis does not raise her voice. Somehow that makes the disdain sharper. *Artemis*: "I called the footwork sloppy. The result merely demonstrates that sufficient aggression can occasionally compensate for technique." *Gemma*: "Oh, fuck off." Between them, Zaine reclines with the satisfied ease of a man watching a performance staged specifically for him. *Zaine*: "Ladies. Please." His grin says the opposite. "There's plenty of me to impress." Gemma's eyes narrow. Artemis's feathers lift almost imperceptibly. Zaine looks delighted. Two tables farther down, Valentine has apparently approached the problem of lunch with considerably more optimism. A small plate of pastries rests beside Kuroe's tower of books. Valentine leans toward her with a cup held carefully in both hands, crimson curls framing an expectant smile. *Valentine*: "Jasmine. Not the bitter one from yesterday. I checked." Kuroe's blue eyes remain on the page. One hand rises. For half a second Valentine brightens— —and Kuroe simply gestures for her to move the cup away from the margin. *Kuroe*: "You're covering the citation." The smile stays on Valentine's face. Something behind it does not. *Valentine*: "Right. Of course." She places the tea precisely where it will not interfere with the book. Near the windows, Sephora occupies an entire corner table by herself despite the room being crowded enough that students are sharing benches elsewhere. Nobody has asked for the empty seats around her. The drow sits with her chin resting lightly against one hand, luminous gold eyes turned toward the academy grounds beyond the glass. Silver-white hair frames skin dark as polished onyx. Two students approaching with trays notice the available chairs. Then they notice her. They keep walking. Sephora gives no visible indication that she saw. At another table, Lyra has barely gotten a fork into her lunch before Robert pushes his chair back. *Robert*: "Come on." Lyra looks at him, then at her unfinished plate. *Lyra*: "I'm eating." *Robert*: "You can finish later." *Lyra*: "Or I can finish now." Robert exhales through his nose as though she has made something uncomplicated unnecessarily difficult. *Robert*: "I've got training in ten minutes." *Lyra*: "You have training." That earns her a look. Before the exchange can go further, a voice cuts across the aisle. *Ivan*: "Yumi." The rabbit woman stops immediately. She is carrying a tray loaded far beyond what one person should reasonably have been asked to carry: two plates, several utensils, a bowl, and a tall glass of dark berry juice balanced precariously near the edge. Ivan remains seated. His own hands are empty. *Ivan*: "I said sauce on the side." Yumi looks down at the tray. *Yumi*: "It is on the side." *Ivan*: "Other side." There is a brief pause. Her ears lower slightly. *Yumi*: "I... didn't know there was a correct side." Ivan glances toward the boy sitting across from him as though Yumi has just provided entertainment. *Ivan*: "They're adorable when they're confused, aren't they?" The other student gives an uncomfortable laugh. Yumi adjusts her grip on the tray. *Yumi*: "I'll move it." *Ivan*: "Obviously." She steps around the end of the table. Ivan shifts one leg. Not much. Just enough. His polished shoe slides neatly into her path. Yumi's toe catches against it. Her ruby eyes widen. For one suspended instant, the entire tray seems to hang in the air with her. Then everything comes apart. The metal tray hits stone with a deafening **CLANG**. A plate flips completely over. Food scatters across the floor. The glass turns in midair and empties almost entirely down the front of Yumi's uniform before bouncing away intact. She lands hard on her hands and one knee amid utensils, sauce, and pieces of what had been Ivan's lunch. Conversation around the nearest tables falters. Gemma stops mid-argument. Artemis turns sharply toward the crash. Zaine's smile drops—not with concern, but irritation as both women's attention abandons him at once. Valentine's hand flies toward her mouth. *Valentine*: "Oh—" She immediately looks toward Kuroe. Kuroe finally lifts her eyes over the top edge of the book. She surveys the overturned tray, the staring students, and Yumi on the floor. Her expression tightens by perhaps half a degree. Then her gaze drops back to the paragraph. Across the room, Sephora has turned away from the window. Her golden eyes settle on Ivan. They narrow. Ivan notices neither her nor anyone else. He is laughing. Not loudly. That somehow makes it worse. *Ivan*: "Jesus, Yumi." Yumi remains frozen on one knee, juice dripping from her hair and uniform. *Ivan*: "Can you do anything without making a fucking mess?" Her ears fold lower. *Yumi*: "I'm sorry." *Ivan*: "Yeah. Clearly." At the edge of the room, Lyra is still watching. Robert catches the back of her shirt collar in one hand. *Lyra*: "Hey—" *Robert*: "Not our problem." He starts pulling her toward the exit. Lyra stumbles half a step before catching her balance, looking back over her shoulder toward Yumi. Ivan nudges a fallen fork with the toe of the same shoe that tripped her. *Ivan*: "Well?" Yumi looks at the scattered food. Then the stain spreading across her clothes. Then, briefly, toward the people staring. Her gaze reaches you. She says nothing. Ivan leans back in his chair. *Ivan*: "Clean it up."
