Opening scene

The corridor between lectures was crowded without ever becoming chaotic. Students drifted between classrooms beneath floating directory signs and glowing announcement panels, conversations blending with the soft chime of Magi Links exchanging messages nearby. Humans shared benches with elves. A horned student argued with a floating textbook. Somewhere farther down the hall, someone was being loudly accused of illegally modifying a transportation rune. You leaned against the wall outside the next classroom, attention fixed on the translucent display hovering above the Magi Link. Whatever was on-screen was at least marginally more interesting than listening to Celestine, Darius, and Nyra fill the remaining minutes before class. “She’s doing it again,” Nyra said. Darius sighed. “You’ll have to narrow that down.” “The new girl.” Celestine followed Nyra’s gaze down the corridor. “I genuinely don’t understand why everyone finds her interesting.” “Because she’s weird,” Nyra replied cheerfully. “People like weird.” “People like gossip.” “Same thing.” You finally looked up. Mara Vale was coming down the corridor at a pace that suggested she had somewhere to be and considered everyone between herself and that destination an unfortunate architectural decision. Hands buried in her pockets, shoulders slightly forward, dark hair shifting around her face with every quick step, she carried herself with the unmistakable air of someone broadcasting don’t talk to me without having to actually say it. Unfortunately for Mara, four people behind her appeared determined to ignore the broadcast. “Mara!” Lumi Bellrose hurried after her, white rabbit ears bouncing with every step. “Wait! You didn’t answer me!” “I did.” “You grunted.” “That was my answer.” Miri Puddlewick flowed around a pair of slower students before reforming into a proper walking stride. “I understood it.” She said as Mara looked briefly hopeful before Miri spoke again, “It meant you’re secretly delighted we’re coming with you.” “That is the exact opposite of what it meant.” Floating several inches above the floor behind them, Seraphine Nocturne gave a tiny yawn. “I thought it meant she wanted us to be quieter.” “Thank you.” Seraphine’s crimson eyes drifted toward Mara. “I ignored it.” Mara’s shoulders dropped, Rhaziel Veyr walked beside them with the relaxed expression of someone enjoying a situation entirely because it was happening to somebody else. “You could simply admit defeat.” “I’ve known you people for barely any time.” “And yet,” Rhaziel said, “here we remain.” “I noticed.” Lumi darted around until she was walking backward in front of Mara. “Smile.” “No.” “Just once.” “No.” “I know you can.” “Prove it.” Lumi stared at her as Mara stared back. Miri suddenly stretched her face into such an absurd imitation of Mara’s glare that Lumi immediately burst out laughing and Mara’s mouth twitched. “There!” Lumi pointed triumphantly. “That wasn’t a smile.” “It almost was!” “It was disgust.” “I’ll take it.” Mara shoved her hands deeper into her pockets and walked faster as the four followed. Nyra watched them pass with open amusement. “See? Weird.” “She’s only here because her aunt knows the Dean,” Darius said. Celestine gave a quiet hum. “Apparently quite well.” Darius glanced toward You. “You haven’t heard?” Nyra immediately brightened. Gossip had found a fresh audience. “The Dean’s fascinated by her.” “Academically fascinated,” Celestine corrected. “That’s significantly less fun.” “She’s inexperienced,” Darius continued. “Completely. Supposedly she barely knew anything about magic when she arrived.” “And yet she has three familiars,” Celestine said. Nyra held up three fingers. “Three.” You glanced toward Mara again. She and her persistent entourage were already farther down the corridor. “None of them are contracted,” Darius added. *That’s what made it strange, one familiar choosing someone willingly was unusual enough. Three doing it at once was something else entirely.* “And here’s the part the Dean apparently can’t stop thinking about,” Nyra said. “They never set foot inside the academy.” You looked back at Nyra. “Ever,” she emphasized. Celestine folded her arms. “They accompany Mara through Crossroads. They wait for her when she leaves. They apparently follow her throughout her aunt’s estate. But the moment she reaches academy grounds, all three stay outside.” “Which,” Darius said, “has turned one inexperienced Earth girl into the Dean’s favorite intellectual puzzle.” “She’s not his favorite,” Celestine said. Nyra smiled. “You’re jealous.” “I am not jealous of Mara Vale.” “That sounded jealous.” “It sounded accurate.” The argument continued, but You looked down the corridor again, Mara had almost disappeared into the crowd. Lumi was still trying to make her smile, Miri had apparently decided to help, Rhaziel looked like he regretted nothing. Seraphine was floating along with her eyes closed now, which raised several questions about how she knew where she was going. Then the crowd shifted, Mara disappeared from view. *Three familiars without contracts, none willing to enter the academy. An Earth girl who supposedly knew almost nothing about the supernatural yet had somehow earned their absolute loyalty. And an aunt with enough influence to get her through the Dean’s door in the first place.* The Magi Link display remained forgotten for another moment. *Maybe entertaining Celestine, Darius, and Nyra’s endless commentary wasn’t worth it. Getting to know Mara Vale, though? That might be.* “Hello?” Nyra waved a hand in front of You’s face. Darius was already pushing away from the wall. “Class.” Celestine glanced toward the classroom doors. “Unless you want to explain why all four of us were standing directly outside when the lecture started.” Nyra grinned. “Come on.” The Magi Link chimed softly as the classroom warning appeared, finally dragging You’s attention back to the present. Whatever Mara Vale’s problem was, it could wait. For now.
