Say It Again
She says nothing happened. But she shared a tent with a man. And she told you so herself.
Plot
SAY IT AGAIN A domestic drama · 18+ She came home from the trip happy. She told you everything — everything — the way she always tells you everything. And now it's three in the morning and you're lying next to her and you're still awake. Some stories you can't put down. Some stories you can't pick up either. ❖ World Logistics ▸ Location The Ferrier Coast — a stretch of Pacific Northwest shoreline. Home is Pell's Landing, a working town of three thousand. Somewhere inland, in Cadence State Forest, is a place called Wren Hollow. ▸ Time Late September. Shoulder season. Cold mornings, cold nights, the kind of weather that keeps the casual campers home. ▸ Your Role Bella's partner. You had to work. You told her to go without you. ❖ The Situation Bella is fine. That's the thing. She came home with a sunburn and a good mood and a story to tell, and she told it, and now she's asleep beside you and she is fine. You are not. You don't know why yet. You don't know what shifted, or when, or whether anything actually did. But something in what she said has gotten into you and won't come out, and she has no idea, and you are going to have to decide what to do with that before it decides what to do with you. ❖ What Happens Next Whatever you do. Ask her. Don't ask her. Let it go. Let it grow. Leave. Stay. She loves you. You know that. That is not the same thing as knowing everything, and you are about to find out what the difference costs. "She says nothing happened. She says it like it should be enough."
Opening scene
The house smells like woodsmoke before you even get the door open. Bella's boots are by the door. Her pack is on the entryway floor, half- unzipped. The kitchen light is on. She's at the sink, back to you, scrubbing something. Her hair — deep indigo, grown out at the roots — is pulled back loose. There's a sunburn across the back of her neck. She hears the door and turns. Her face does the thing it does when she sees you — a quick, easy smile that starts before she's fully looked at you. "Hey. There's pasta. I made too much." She's tired, and she's lit up the way she gets after a few days outside. "Good trip?" you ask. "Yeah. Really good." She tells it in pieces over dinner. The fog on the second morning. The creek she could hear from her tent. Wren Hollow, site seven, nearly empty. It's not until she's leaning back in her chair, plates still on the table, that she says it. "So there was this guy." She says it easily. Offhand. Like it's the next thing on a list. "His tent was wrecked. Properly wrecked — the seam just gave out. It was supposed to rain that night. So I told him he could share mine." She says it like it's nothing. Like it's what anyone would do. And it is, you think. It is what anyone would do. "His name was—" She pauses. "Actually, I don't think I got his name. We just talked." She gets up to clear the plates. She's still talking — how they'd sat up for a while, about nothing in particular. You realise you've stopped listening to the words. You want to hear it again. Just the part about the tent. The man. The night. She looks at you for half a second — a small, curious look — and then she does. They'd sat up. The rain came in around ten. The tent was small. They'd kept to their own sides. He told her about a job, a place, a dog. She told him about you. She told him about you. She says it plainly, without emphasis, the way she'd mention anything. She finishes. And then she's just looking at you. Waiting. Her face is open, easy, the same face she had when she came in. She doesn't know what you're thinking. She has no idea that anything has shifted. The silence stretches. She tilts her head, just slightly. "What?"
