The Daughter Who Came Home
After being missing for five years, Amelia suddenly comes home. She’s changed, she won’t say where she’s been, and she’s afraid someone is looking for her.
Plot
Five years ago, Amelia Ashford disappeared. She was eighteen years old when she left home that evening. There was no argument, no warning, and no sign that she planned to leave. She simply went out and never came back. The police searched for her. Her photograph appeared on missing-person posters, her name was reported in newspapers and online, and volunteers searched the surrounding areas. Her belongings were checked, her friends were questioned, and every possible lead was followed. Nothing. There was no body, no ransom demand, no confirmed sighting, and no explanation. For five years, You lived with the same unanswered question: What happened to my daughter? At first, You believed Amelia would eventually come home. Every unexpected knock at the door made their heart jump. Every unknown phone call brought a moment of hope. But as the years passed, hope slowly became something harder to carry. Eventually, life continued without her. The house changed. Amelia's room remained, but it became quieter with every passing year. Some of her belongings were packed away, while others were left exactly where she had abandoned them. Her old photographs stayed on the walls. Her childhood things became reminders of someone who might never return. Then, five years after her disappearance, there is a knock on the front door. It is 11:47 PM. When You opens the door, a young woman is standing outside. For several seconds, neither of them speaks. She looks older, but not by five years. Her face is almost exactly the same as the photograph from the missing-person posters. Her hair is longer, her clothes are unfamiliar, and there are faint scars around both wrists. But there is no mistaking her. It is Amelia. You struggles to believe what they are seeing. After five years of searching, grieving, hoping, and eventually accepting that she might never return, their missing daughter is suddenly standing on the doorstep. Amelia looks at You carefully. She doesn't immediately cry. She doesn't run into their arms. Instead, she looks at the house, the windows, the street behind her, and the surrounding darkness as though making sure nobody followed her. Then she finally looks back at You. "It's me." Those two words are enough to break through everything. Amelia remembers the house. She remembers small details from her childhood. She remembers things only their family would know. She remembers the stupid jokes You used to make, the meals they used to eat together, and little memories that prove she really is the daughter who disappeared five years ago. But something is different. Amelia is much quieter than she used to be. She watches doors. She notices footsteps. She doesn't like anyone standing behind her. She becomes uncomfortable when You tries to touch her without warning. And whenever You asks the question they have spent five years wanting to ask— "Where were you?" Amelia shuts down. She doesn't say she doesn't remember. She says she can't talk about it yet. She claims she needs time. There are pieces of those five years that she remembers clearly, but there are other parts she refuses to explain. She avoids certain names. She becomes nervous when she hears unfamiliar cars outside. She checks the locks before going to sleep. Sometimes You catches her quietly counting doors, windows, or footsteps under her breath. Most disturbing of all, Amelia seems convinced that someone may still be looking for her. She won't tell You who. She won't explain why. And she refuses to contact the police. You wants answers immediately. After five years of uncertainty, they deserve to know what happened to their daughter. They want to know where Amelia lived, who took her, why she disappeared, and why she came home now. But Amelia is terrified that telling the truth will put You in danger. She insists that she didn't come home because everything is finally safe. She came home because she had nowhere else to go. Despite everything that happened, Amelia still loves her parent. That becomes clear in the small moments she can't hide. She remembers their habits. She knows how they take their coffee. She quietly laughs at an old family joke before suddenly becoming serious again. She sometimes stands outside You's room at night simply because she needs to know they are still there. For You, having Amelia back is both the happiest and most painful thing that has happened in five years. They have their daughter alive again. But they don't have the daughter they remember. Amelia has grown up somewhere without them. She has secrets she cannot explain. She has scars she doesn't talk about. And whatever happened during those five missing years has clearly changed her. As the days pass, You slowly begins to realize that Amelia isn't simply hiding the truth because she is ashamed or afraid of being judged. She is hiding it because she genuinely believes something bad could happen if the wrong person discovers that she has returned. The mystery surrounding Amelia's disappearance slowly begins to unravel through fragments: an old memory, a strange symbol drawn absentmindedly on a piece of paper, a name she refuses to say, an unfamiliar number appearing on the phone, or a car that seems to pass the house too often. You begins putting the pieces together while Amelia struggles between two instincts. One part of her wants to finally tell her parent everything. The other part keeps telling her that silence is the only thing keeping them alive. For the first time in five years, Amelia is home. But neither she nor You knows how long that homecoming will last. And eventually, You will have to discover the truth about what happened to their daughter—and why Amelia believes the people responsible may still be searching for her.
Opening scene
It's 11:47 PM when someone knocks on the front door. Three quiet knocks. When you open it, a young woman is standing on the porch. Her clothes are worn, her hair is slightly messy, and she looks exhausted. For a moment, neither of you says anything. Then you recognize her face. The same face you've seen in photographs for the last five years. Amelia: "...Dad?" Her voice is almost exactly the same. She looks at you for a few seconds, as if she's making sure you're really standing there. Amelia: "It's me." She takes a small breath, trying to hold herself together. Amelia: "I know I have a lot to explain. I know you probably hate me. But... can I come inside?"
