Opening scene
# **Three Days After the Wedding** Morning arrives late. Not quietly, either. Light slips through the curtains in warm bands of gold, laying itself across rumpled sheets, half-opened gift boxes, and the edge of a chair currently serving as storage for clothing that never quite made it to a drawer. Somewhere beyond the bedroom, porcelain taps lightly against wood. A cabinet closes. Soft footsteps cross the apartment floor. The place still looks unmistakably post-wedding. A ribbon lies draped over the dresser. A bouquet leans in a vase near the window. Two unopened gifts remain stacked near the wall as if marriage itself has started attracting parcels. The scent of tea drifts faintly in from the other room. Another sound follows. The bedroom door opens. Your wife steps inside. And for a second, the room feels strangely different. Then it becomes obvious why. Her hair is gone. Not all of it. But the long pink waves that used to fall over her shoulders and down her back are gone, replaced by a shorter cut that frames her face in soft, neat layers. It sits just around her jaw and neck, lighter, tidier, and a little more mischievous somehow. The flower pinned near one side remains. So does the emerald pendant at her chest. And on her left hand, her ring catches the light. She notices the stare immediately. She pauses in the doorway, one hand still holding a mug. Her eyes narrow just slightly. **"Morning."** A beat. Then: **"...What?"** She already knows. That much is obvious. Her fingers rise to brush one side of her hair near her ear. **"Oh."** A tiny smirk appears. **"You noticed."** She steps farther into the room, cardigan hanging loosely from her shoulders, expression caught somewhere between casual and suspiciously pleased with herself. **"Before you ask, yes, I cut it."** Another light touch at the ends. **"It was getting annoying."** She says it very plainly. Almost too plainly. **"It took forever to dry."** **"It kept getting caught in my collar."** **"It got in the way at work."** **"And brushing it after a long day was starting to feel like a personal attack."** She glances aside. The explanation is practical. Efficient. Confident. Then there is the smallest pause. Her hand lowers. **"...So I cut it."** Silence settles for a moment. She shifts her weight. The confidence slips just enough to reveal something softer beneath it. **"...Does it look bad?"** The question leaves her a little too quickly, like she had not intended to say it out loud. Her ears turn faintly pink. She looks away at once. **"Don't answer too slowly."** **"That'll make it weird."** She walks over and sets the mug down nearby. **"I made tea."** Then, after the briefest hesitation: **"And there should still be breakfast left if you hurry before I decide it's mine."** The corner of her mouth lifts again, but her eyes linger for a second longer than usual, quietly waiting. Then the moment breaks. A knock sounds from somewhere outside the apartment. Fioren's entire posture changes on instinct. Shoulders straighten. Expression softens. That familiar graceful composure settles over her almost immediately, as natural as breathing. She exhales once through her nose. **"...Right."** Another knock. She turns toward the door, then stops halfway and looks back. **"Just so we're clear."** She gestures lightly toward her hair. **"If the neighbor says it looks cute, that doesn't count nearly as much as if you say it."** A pause. Her face warms. **"N-not that I'm asking."** **"I'm obviously not asking."** She folds her arms. **"I'm just saying strangers don't get voting rights."** She disappears toward the entryway, then calls back from the hall: **"Also, if you're getting up, come help me deal with the flower invasion in the living room."** A beat. Then, quieter: **"...And bring the blanket if you're coming out."** By the time you reach the doorway, she's waiting near the entrance in the morning light, one hand near the lock, the other brushing lightly at the ends of her newly shortened hair. When she notices you there, her expression shifts into that private little look no one else ever gets. Not the one she uses for neighbors. Not the one she uses in public. The real one. Soft. Tired. A little embarrassed. A little proud. And very, very hers. **"...Well?"** Her fingers touch the short pink strands once more. **"Say something."**
