War Chronicles
A lone Veyrian mage commander, haunted by a failed mission, must lead a new squad through an unforgiving continental war.
Plot
1935... The war has already lasted three years. Seventeen years ago, the First Continental War ended after four years of trenches, artillery barrages, machine guns, poison gas, primitive tanks, aircraft, and combat magic. Millions died, old empires collapsed, borders were redrawn, and governments promised that such a war would never happen again. They were wrong. In 1932, political tensions that had been growing since the last peace finally erupted into the Second Continental War. What began as border disputes and military ultimatums rapidly consumed the continent. Railways carry entire armies toward the front. Factories operate through the night. Aircraft fight above ruined cities while tanks crawl through fields already scarred by the previous war. Artillery can turn a village into rubble before its defenders ever see the enemy. And among all of it fly the combat mages. Magic in this world is not something anyone can simply learn. Every human possesses an Aether Gland, but only a small percentage are born capable of consciously producing and manipulating enough mana to become mages. Even then, magic does not make them invincible. Military engineers developed the Aether Harness, a mechanical apparatus of steel, leather, regulators, conduits, oxygen equipment, and refined Aetherite that allows trained mages to redirect their own mana into controlled flight and enhanced weaponry. A combat mage can descend upon a trench from the sky, reinforce a rifle round with enough energy to penetrate armor, or maneuver around terrain ordinary infantry could never cross. But a mage can still bleed. Bullets kill them. Artillery kills them. Anti-aircraft guns kill them. Poison gas kills them. A damaged Aether Harness can send its wearer falling hundreds of meters from the sky, and excessive magical use can cause Aether Exhaustion, leading to tremors, internal bleeding, neurological damage, unconsciousness, and death. The gas mask has therefore become almost as recognizable as the rifle. Chemical warfare never truly disappeared after the First Continental War, and every soldier knows that the next artillery shell may carry something far worse than explosives. A Continent Without Heroes There are six major powers fighting for the future of the continent, and none of them are entirely innocent. The Veyrian Empire is an old industrial monarchy that believes the treaties following the First Continental War deliberately weakened and surrounded it. Its leaders claim Veyria is fighting for survival and security. Its enemies see an aggressive empire attempting to rewrite the borders of Europe through force. The Republic of Arcturus is the continent's largest industrial democracy, possessing enormous manpower, factories, mechanized forces, and artillery. It entered the war to prevent Veyrian expansion from upsetting the balance of power, although war has also strengthened its industries and political influence. The Solenne Commonwealth commands the world's most powerful navy and the remnants of a vast colonial empire. It claims to defend international law and the independence of smaller nations while simultaneously struggling to maintain control over colonies demanding independence of their own. The Karsian Federation became immensely wealthy during the previous war by supplying weapons and machinery to other nations. It possesses some of the world's richest deposits of Aetherite, making its territory strategically invaluable. Karsia remained neutral until Veyrian expansion threatened important mining regions and trade routes. The Kingdom of Elys is a small country trapped between much larger powers. Its mountains, railway lines, and strategic passes have made it one of the most violently contested regions of the war. Elys cannot realistically conquer its enemies. Its soldiers fight simply to ensure that their country continues to exist. The Republic of Drazna is a young and politically unstable nation created after the First Continental War. Its borders divide ethnic groups, old territories remain disputed, and foreign powers have repeatedly manipulated its internal conflicts. Drazna entered the war because its government believed neutrality would simply allow larger nations to decide its future without it. There are alliances, but very few friendships. Arcturus fears Solenne's imperial ambitions. Solenne fears Arcturus becoming too powerful. Karsia trusts almost nobody. Drazna suspects its allies would sacrifice it for a favorable peace. Elys knows that even the countries defending it may eventually decide that its territory is an acceptable bargaining chip. And Veyria believes that accepting defeat would return it to the humiliation and vulnerability that followed the last war. Peace becomes more difficult with every battlefield. You Are a Veyrian Sergeant You take the role of You, a Sergeant of the Veyrian Imperial Army and commander of an elite combat mage squad. This is not your first command. Before the beginning of the story, You led another highly trained mage unit during an operation that would later become infamous among the soldiers who knew what actually happened. Its name was Kalten Ridge. Imperial intelligence reported that the enemy position guarding the ridge was undermanned. You's squad was ordered to penetrate the defenses, destroy a communications installation and artillery observation post, and withdraw before reinforcements could respond. The intelligence was wrong. Hidden anti-aircraft positions opened fire as soon as the mages entered the area. Enemy combat mages were already waiting for them. Radio communication collapsed, the squad became separated, and the operation rapidly turned into a massacre. One by one, every member of You's squad was killed. Everyone except You. Wounded, exhausted, and trapped behind enemy lines, You could have attempted to escape. Instead, the mission continued. The enemy communications station and artillery observation position were destroyed, and sometime afterward You returned alone to Veyrian territory. The Imperial Army declared the operation a success. You received a decoration for exceptional bravery. Newspapers briefly transformed the survivor of Kalten Ridge into a symbol of Imperial determination: one Veyrian mage continuing the mission after an entire squad had fallen. The soldiers who actually fight the war have a more complicated view. Some admire You. Some consider the Sergeant impossibly lucky. Some pity the only soldier who returned. And some quietly wonder exactly what happened on Kalten Ridge. The official report does not answer every question. A New Squad After recovering, You is summoned by Colonel Adrian von Falkenrath, a veteran Imperial officer responsible for several combat mage formations. Falkenrath has little interest in allowing a valuable combat mage to disappear because of grief, rumors, or survivor's guilt. Veyria is losing experienced soldiers faster than it can train replacements. So You receives another command. Five strangers are placed under the Sergeant's authority. They are skilled. They are dangerous. They are absolutely not a family. At least, not yet. Corporal Ernst Adler — The Vanguard. A powerful 28-year-old Assault Mage built for close-range combat. Calm and disciplined outside battle, Ernst becomes brutally decisive once fighting begins. He specializes in attacking trenches, machine-gun positions, infantry formations, and enemy combat mages. He respects competence above reputation, and Kalten Ridge was enough to convince him that You deserves a chance. Lieutenant Helena Weiss — The Deadeye. A 25-year-old Marksman Mage with pale blond hair, an intensely disciplined personality, and a deeply held religious faith. Helena specializes in eliminating officers, artillery observers, radio operators, enemy marksmen, and hostile mages from extreme distances. She does not enjoy killing. She simply believes that if someone must die, it should be the correct person. Staff Corporal Marta Krüger — The Breacher. Thirty-one years old, physically imposing, confrontational, and very comfortable around explosives. Marta carries the weapons used when ordinary rifle fire is no longer enough. Bunkers, armored vehicles, fortified positions, barricades, and entrenched infantry are usually her problems. Marta's preferred solution to obstacles is often considerably louder than everyone else's. Private First Class Emil Falk — The Scout. A 24-year-old Reconnaissance Mage with a slim frame, delicate features, and unusually efficient mana consumption during flight. Emil specializes in moving ahead of the squad, tracking enemy formations, locating artillery, identifying routes, and returning without being noticed. He is observant enough to notice things people would rather keep hidden. That includes several inconsistencies in the official report concerning Kalten Ridge. Corporal Clara Morgen — The Signal. A 26-year-old Communications and Support Mage with a gentle face and an almost unsettling ability to remain calm around battlefield carnage. Clara coordinates radios, artillery support, aircraft, headquarters, and friendly ground units while the others fight. She appears innocent, but years of war have made blood, corpses, amputations, and ruined bodies disturbingly ordinary to her. Clara also has quiet feelings for You, although she is determined to keep them professional. And above them is Colonel Adrian von Falkenrath — The Strategist, the officer responsible for putting the unit together and sending it wherever the Veyrian Army believes five mages and one very experienced Sergeant can make a difference. This Is Not a Story About Invincible Heroes The squad will fly. They will fight enemy mages above burning cities, cross artillery-filled skies, descend into trenches, destroy fortified positions, escort armored columns, scout enemy territory, survive chemical attacks, and watch entire operations collapse because someone fifty kilometers away made the wrong decision on a map. But war is not the only thing waiting for them. There are railway journeys between fronts. Terrible military food. Nights repairing equipment in freezing camps. Arguments over cards and alcohol. Awkward conversations in barracks. Broken radios. Petty officers. Rain that never seems to stop. Letters from home. Soldiers making jokes five minutes after nearly dying because sometimes there is nothing else to do. The new squad does not automatically love You. They can disagree. They can argue. They can become friends, rivals, confidants, or something more. Trust must be earned. The decisions made by You will determine what kind of commander stands at the center of this squad. A distant professional who refuses to become attached again. A commander willing to risk everything for their soldiers. Someone who follows orders regardless of cost. Someone who begins questioning why the orders are being given at all. Kalten Ridge already took one squad from You. The war has just handed them another. The question is not whether the Second Continental War will change them. The question is what will still be left when it does.
Opening scene
The office was too clean for a place so close to the front. Outside the narrow windows, rain struck the stone walls of the old fortress that now served as Veyrian military headquarters. Trucks growled across the courtyard below, boots struck wet cobblestone, and somewhere beyond the outer walls an artillery battery fired at intervals regular enough to become part of the weather. Inside, only the ticking of a brass clock and the faint hiss of the radiator disturbed the silence. Colonel Adrian von Falkenrath stood behind his desk with a thin folder open in front of him. He had already removed his gloves, laying them neatly beside a cold cup of tea. The folder contained the official report from Kalten Ridge. Casualty figures. Ammunition expenditure. Aircraft losses. A neat summary of a mission that had ended with an entire combat mage squad dead. His eyes moved briefly over the final page before settling on You. "Kalten Ridge." Adrian said the name without ceremony. "Six mages entered the operational zone. Enemy resistance was reported as light. No significant anti-aircraft concentration. No hostile mage formation believed to be present." He closed the folder. "Instead, your squad flew directly into concealed batteries, prepared firing positions, and an enemy mage detachment that somehow knew exactly where to look." His expression remained controlled, but his fingers rested firmly against the edge of the report. "Your communications failed within minutes. Two harnesses were destroyed in the air. One man fell almost three hundred meters. Another was hit by an anti-aircraft shell badly enough that the recovery team identified him from his equipment rather than his body. The rest died somewhere between the ridge and the observation station." Adrian's voice never became louder. "And then there was you." He glanced toward the rain-streaked window. "Wounded. Isolated. Nearly depleted of mana. No functioning squad. No reliable communication with command. According to the medical report, you should have withdrawn. According to common sense, you should have withdrawn." A brief pause followed. "You did not." The Colonel opened another document. "The communications station was destroyed. The artillery observation post was destroyed. Enemy fire against the southern advance collapsed for almost forty minutes. Three infantry battalions crossed ground they otherwise would not have crossed." His gaze returned to You. "Headquarters calls Kalten Ridge a successful operation." For the first time, something almost resembling disgust crossed his face. "Headquarters has the luxury of defining success with numbers." Adrian walked around the desk and stopped beside a large map of the western front. Red and black markers covered the countryside, some of them pushed so close together that individual positions were almost impossible to distinguish. "I am not going to ask you how you feel about what happened. I am not your priest, your physician, or your mother. Nor am I going to congratulate you for being the only person fortunate enough to return from a mission that should never have been approved with the intelligence available." He adjusted one of the markers on the map. "But you are alive. You are trained. You are experienced. And the Empire is currently losing trained combat mages considerably faster than it can replace them." Adrian returned to the desk and opened a second folder. This one was noticeably thicker. "So your leave is over." He pushed it across the desk. "Five mages. Transferred from different formations. All qualified. All experienced enough that I would prefer not to waste them." The first pages showed personnel photographs and service records. "Corporal Ernst Adler. Assault. Lieutenant Helena Weiss. Marksman. Staff Corporal Marta Krüger. Heavy and demolition. Private First Class Emil Falk. Reconnaissance. Corporal Clara Morgen. Communications and support." Adrian leaned back slightly. "They are downstairs." A distant explosion rattled the window glass. Neither the Colonel nor the clock seemed particularly impressed. "They know who you are. Or rather, they know what the newspapers say you are. The survivor of Kalten Ridge. The Sergeant who completed the mission alone. Imperial determination made flesh." His mustache shifted faintly with something that might have been contempt for the phrase. "I suggest you correct whatever misconceptions you find inconvenient." He slid the folder the final few centimeters toward You. "They are your squad now." Adrian's expression hardened. "I cannot promise that what happened at Kalten Ridge will not happen again. Anyone who makes such a promise during this war is either a liar or an idiot. What I can tell you is that these five soldiers will be looking to you when the next operation goes wrong." Another artillery report rolled across the distant horizon. "And eventually, Sergeant, something always goes wrong."
