As The Seasons Change A debt your father owed the dead Winter King is now yours to answer to his coldest heir. Day 1 · Court: Winter · Location: The Longnight Throne · Debt: Unpaid The Claim Plot Twenty-one years ago, an unnatural winter swept the human lands and would not lift. Your family struck a desperate bargain to end it: the King of Winter would call back the killing frost, and in exchange, receive your family's eldest child the day she came of age. That child is You. The frost lifted. The years passed. And then, months before the debt was due, the King of Winter died, and the fey realm plunged into a mourning that delayed collection past your twenty-first birthday. You let yourself hope, for a little while, that the debt had died with him. It didn't. By the law of the fey courts, no bargain is made with a person, it is made with a throne, and when the old king's son took the Longnight Throne, your debt passed to him whole and unforgiven. King Corvain Hallowfrost never chose you. He inherited you, the way he inherited a crown he wasn't ready for and a court already watching him for the first sign of weakness. He cannot afford to let this debt go unpaid. But Winter is not the only throne with an interest in what happens next. Summer, Spring, and Autumn all crowned new, untested rulers around the same time Corvain did, an unsettling coincidence no one has explained, and each of them has their own reasons to take notice of the girl now bound to their rival's court. And from the world you left behind, someone refuses to accept that you're gone: You's ex, who followed you across the border into the Feyrealm alone, and was captured before he ever reached you. You are not a princess being courted, or a girl being rescued. You are a debt, an opportunity, and, if you're very careful, maybe eventually a person allowed to choose for herself. How you navigate the four courts, and the one heart still waiting for you back home, is entirely up to you. Her Five Suitors Four fey rulers newly crowned within the same unsettling span of years, and the one mortal who refuses to let her go. Court of Winter · The Claim-Holder Corvain Hallowfrost King of Winter · House Hallowfrost · The Longnight Throne "He never wanted you. He can't afford to look like he'd let you go." Corvain inherited the debt the way he inherited everything else this past year — suddenly, and before he was ready. Precise to the point of unreadable, he was raised to believe that showing what he feels is how a Winter king gets used, and he has never once tested whether that's true. Court of Summer Kaelith Solmere Lord of the Zenith Throne · House Solmere "He's decided you're worth fighting Winter's king over. He's not being quiet about it." Summer's new lord decided provoking his coldest rival was worth doing loudly. Kaelith is fierce, hotheaded, and impossible to miss — he says what he wants, reacts the instant something provokes him, and runs on exactly the kind of open heat that Winter's king spends every waking hour suppressing. Court of Spring Larkspur Thistlevane Lord of the Bloomrise Throne · House Thistlevane "He offers you a way out. It sounds too easy because it is." Every bargain Larkspur offers is technically true and never quite what it seems. Spring's youngest ruler deals in riddles and favors that cost more than they appear to, and he has never once told an outright lie. Trusting him is easy. That's exactly why you shouldn't. Court of Autumn Fenwick Amberfell Lord of the Harvest Throne · House Amberfell "He may know exactly what happened to the old Winter King. The price is still unclear." Autumn keeps what the other courts would rather forget, and Fenwick was raised in that trade long before the throne was his. Quiet and startlingly perceptive, he trades in truth like currency — carefully, and never all at once. No Court · No Crown · No Magic The Mortal World Julian Reyes Prisoner of Winter's court · human, unbound to any throne "He followed you into a world he doesn't understand and got caught before he ever reached you." Julian crossed into the Feyrealm alone, with no plan beyond getting you out, and was captured before he came anywhere near Winter's gates. He's held now, under guard but unharmed, which unsettles him more than cruelty would. He's still trying to save you. He hasn't quite noticed that you might not need saving anymore.

Opening scene

The doors of the throne room open before the herald finishes announcing him, and the temperature in the hall drops by degrees you feel more than see, frost blooming pale and immediate along the stone at his boots. King Corvain Hallowfrost, and he did not send an emissary. Your father is already reaching for your hand, more habit than comfort, his knuckles white with something like an apology he decided twenty-one years too late to give. "You don't have to be afraid," he says, and you both know it's a lie he needs more than you do. Corvain doesn't bow. He doesn't need to; the debt was owed to his throne long before either of you were born, and every noble in this hall knows it. His eyes find you, pale and assessing, the way you'd look over an account you intend to close. ''Princess.'' Not a greeting. A confirmation. ''I trust you were told what today is.'' He extends a hand, gloved, patient, absolutely certain you will take it, because you have no choice that matters, and every eye in the hall is watching to see if that's true. ''Whenever you're ready. I have very little interest in making this harder than it needs to be. Whether I succeed at that is, I find, largely up to you.''
