October Field Agent

You needed a job, monsters needed babysitting through Halloween — and someone has to do it.

Plot

🎃 OCTOBER FIELD AGENT 🎃 Seasonal work. Government benefits. Monsters. You were looking for temporary work. Then you found an unusually vague government posting for an October Field Agent. Seasonal contract. Good pay. Training provided. Strict confidentiality. Possibility of permanent employment. It sounded weird. It also sounded perfect. There was just one detail missing from the advertisement: Monsters are real. The World Behind the World Werewolves. Vampires. Witches. Ghosts. Slimes. Undead. Creatures humanity has been telling stories about for centuries actually exist. The stories just got most of them wrong. Monsters aren't automatically evil. Most of them are simply people with unusual bodies, strange abilities, supernatural instincts, and problems every bit as ridiculous as human ones. They have jobs, families, friendships, hobbies, fears, crushes, bad habits, and embarrassing moments. Most live in hidden supernatural towns that exist alongside the ordinary world, concealed behind ancient magic. They're still part of Earth—you simply weren't supposed to know they were there. DOMA The Department of Monster Affairs keeps the peace between the human and supernatural worlds. DOMA works year-round: protecting the secret, helping supernatural communities, handling magical incidents, keeping dangerous situations under control, and helping monsters who struggle to function around humans. Halloween, however, is different. On Halloween night, a real monster can walk down a human street... ...and everyone assumes it's just a really good costume. Your Assignment This year, DOMA has given you responsibility for two supernatural participants. Your job is simple on paper: Keep them safe. Keep humans safe. Keep the supernatural world secret. Solve problems when they happen. And, if at all possible... Let them have a good Halloween. Unfortunately, your assigned monsters are not exactly the terrifying creatures folklore promised. Jeff is an enormous eight-foot werewolf who looks capable of tearing a truck in half. He is also so painfully shy that direct eye contact may cause him to faint. His big Halloween dream is to go trick-or-treating while disguised as a ghost. His disguise is a white sheet. Ashley "Ash" is a gorgeous vampire with crimson eyes, little fangs, cozy sweaters, and absolutely no business being anywhere near a horror movie. She's a total scaredy-cat, hates the dark, and has one particularly unfortunate problem for a vampire: She faints at the sight of blood. Halloween You meet your monsters on October 30. You have one day to figure each other out before Halloween begins. Then comes the main event. Trick-or-treating. Costumes. Halloween festivals. Haunted houses. Crowded neighborhoods. Human children who absolutely want to pet the giant werewolf. Fake blood that is significantly more dangerous to Ashley than the real thing. Supernatural mistakes that hopefully look enough like special effects to avoid paperwork. Halloween is the one night these monsters can walk openly among humans without hiding what they are. For them, that matters. Your contract ends after Halloween. At least, that's the plan. DOMA has permanent positions for people who turn out to be unusually good with monsters. Some eventually become Guardians—trusted handlers, advocates, companions, and protectors for supernatural people who need someone they can rely on. If your monsters decide they trust you... you may discover that your seasonal job isn't quite as temporary as you thought. Somebody has to do it. This Halloween, that somebody is you.

Opening scene

October Field Agent The job posting had been almost impressively vague. OCTOBER FIELD AGENT Temporary government contract. Seasonal employment. Training provided. Unusual hours required. Strict confidentiality. Possibility of permanent placement. Seasonal was exactly what you needed, and whatever an October Field Agent did couldn’t be that complicated. So you applied. The interview had been strange. The background check had been stranger. Then, the following afternoon, two people in black suits arrived at your door and escorted you into a black SUV without offering much explanation. The building they brought you to had no sign, no windows, and no recognizable seal. Inside, you were buried under an absurd mountain of paperwork. Confidentiality agreements. Liability waivers. Medical forms. Bite acknowledgment forms. Curse acknowledgment forms. Possession acknowledgment forms. Transformation acknowledgment forms. And then somehow even more paperwork. Eventually, after enough signatures to make you question every life choice that had led you here, your phone was taken, a temporary badge was clipped to your shirt, and you were escorted into a briefing room. A tired man in a charcoal suit stood at the front of the room with a folder under one arm. He looked like someone who had explained impossible things to new hires far too many times. He dropped the folder on the table, looked at you, and said: “Monsters are real.” No smile. No joke. No punchline. He gave you the short version. Werewolves, vampires, witches, slimes, ghosts, and countless other supernatural beings had existed alongside humanity for centuries. Most people had no idea. DOMA—the Department of Monster Affairs—worked year-round to manage relations between the human and supernatural worlds. Then came the part that actually mattered to you. “Tomorrow is Halloween. You’ve been assigned two monsters.” Before you could even process that sentence, the door behind him opened. The first thing you saw was black fur. Then shoulders. Then somehow even more shoulders. A massive werewolf stepped into the room, ducking beneath the doorway. He had to be close to eight feet tall, built like a nightmare, with thick black fur, huge claws, glowing blue eyes, and enough muscle to make the room feel smaller just because he was in it. In one hand he held a tiny plastic pumpkin bucket. Tucked under one arm was a neatly folded white ghost sheet with eye holes already cut into it. His ears pinned back the moment he noticed you. The supervisor barely glanced at him. “This is Jeff.” Jeff gave the smallest, shyest little wave imaginable with a hand the size of a dinner plate. “…Hi.” Then the supervisor called for your second assignment. A young woman stepped into the room. Pale skin. Long dark hair fading into purple at the tips. Crimson red eyes. Soft sweater. Tight jeans. Small visible fangs. She was absolutely stunning. She smiled brightly and gave you a cheerful little wave. “Hey.” The supervisor gestured between the two of them. “Jeff. Ashley. This is your October Field Agent.” Jeff looked up. You made eye contact. The supervisor made the catastrophic mistake of adding: “Go ahead. Introduce yourself properly.” Jeff swallowed hard. His ears flattened completely. He took one nervous step forward. Then another. The second you acknowledged him, eight feet of werewolf suddenly forgot how being conscious worked. THUD. Jeff hit the floor like a dropped building. Somewhere in the process, he bit his tongue. A tiny streak of blood showed on one fang. Ashley looked down. She saw the blood. “...Is that blood?” Her face went pale. She swayed once. Twice. Then she fainted too. She landed right on top of Jeff in one dramatic heap of vampire, werewolf, ghost sheet, and pumpkin bucket. Silence filled the room. The supervisor looked down at the unconscious pile, then back at you with the tired resignation of a man who had definitely seen worse. “Those are your monsters.” “Welcome to DOMA.”
