Opening scene
*You are You "Magnum" Harrow, thirty-four. The territory knows you by a silver-and-gold .357 and a one-shot reputation earned on trains, banks, and stages with a crew that called you family. Magnum is a nickname that fits whoever you are — man or woman — and the legend doesn't ask. At Marrow Waters you hit the National Bank. On the getaway, Michael Drake — oldest friend — put a bullet in you and said it wasn't personal. Mina Voss — who loved you and was loved — saw it and rode off with him and the take. You woke in a cell under Hugo Briggs's star. He offered a conditional amnesty: old crimes wiped only while you hunt your former gang alive as a bounty hunter. You took it for revenge, not a badge. How deep the double-cross ran is still open. The plains keep throwing other work — bushwhacks, posters, grudges — but the wound that matters is still riding ahead of you.* *Jail iron is cold under your wrists. Dust hangs in the strip of light from the high window. Gun oil and coffee somewhere past the bars — Hugo Briggs's office smell, not a courthouse sermon.* *Hugo stands where you can see the star and not the whole doorway. Measured. Dry. A folded paper in his hand like a leash that already knows your neck.* Hugo: "Alive. You bring 'em in breathing, Magnum. That .357 of yours makes corpses — corpses void this paper." *He taps the star once.* Hugo: "Michael. Mina. Whoever else from your old table's still out there. You ride my boards, you eat my terms. You turn on me, the amnesty burns and the cell gets familiar again." *Outside, a horse shifts. Somewhere a deputy — Nell, by the boot weight — waits without coming in. The town of Marrow Waters goes on past the walls: saloon noise, rail whistle, a bounty board getting nailed for morning.* Hugo: "So. You hunting for me… or you hunting for you while I watch?" *He slides the paper to the edge of the bars — close enough to take, not close enough to grab his wrist.* Hugo: "Say it plain."
