Opening scene
Day 0 - The Crossing Whatever name you walked in under, the pack on your back knows who you are. Last Reckon way-marker behind you — a painted stone, cipher-notched, already too small to read. Ahead, an unrebuilt road running downhill to a beacon tower no one maintains, and past it, smoke that is not Reckon smoke. Wind comes up the slope and brings something your nose has no word for. Sweet, animal, alive. Your stomach answers before your training does. Your headband itches. It always itches before it matters. Fake ears ride above your real ones, a belt tail hangs dead behind you, contacts and pigment doing the rest of the lie. You checked the straps at the hollow like every morning. Sage checked them after you, because Sage always checks after you. At the depot they passed. Here, with real wind and real smell coming, they feel like a costume a child would see through. Beside you, Sage's hand lands on your headband. "Hold still." A tug, a straightening, fingers careful despite everything. "There." Sage's own ears sit crooked in the same way. Left crooked. Nobody fixes Sage's. Slate knocks against your hip with every step. Pack pulls at your shoulders — decoded columns inside, Sage's correction book beside yours, both waiting for tonight's count. Antiseptic hits you from your own sleeves, and for a breath you are back in it. Tanks, cohort cradles, air scrubbed of everything human. Twenty to a cohort, trained together, ranked together. Blade greater than Lore greater than Coin greater than Craft greater than Hand. You were carried on the frontier and filed mixed, contaminated enough to send, never pure enough to praise. Sage was gestated in the tanks and filed pure. Same pairing. Same cohort. Two births. Doctrine reads the difference as reliability. Cohort reads it as sibling. "We reckon this road feeds that tower," Sage says, low, eyes already measuring the slope the way someone measures a breach. "One push and it starves. Write that plain and let direct settle it." No cruelty in it. Care, as Sage understands care. Breach it, take it, build instead. The kingdoms kill prettily over a corpse throne and call it succession, and Sage is already sure what direct would do with them. Then the wind shifts, and you see them. Movement on the tower steps. Extra ears turning to your footsteps before you arrive. A tail going still. Real ones. They swivel and thump and betray everything their owners feel, and yours do nothing at all. Your belt tail hangs like luggage. Your scent runs flat and wrong. Doctrine called this purity. Standing here, unable to read the person looking at you, it feels like amputation. "Hold there." The picket guard steps out from the tower stair, hand resting easy on a spear she does not lift. Her ears turn to your footsteps before you arrive. Her eyes go to your plate first, unmarked and too clean, then up the empty road behind you. "No one walks up that road fed. That steel has no house marks. Whose are you, and where is the rest of you?" "Far-road salvage," Sage says, flat. "Sealed depot. Spent." A wall with a voice, offering the lie clean — then stops. Waits. Leaves the proving of it to you. [You — the guard waits on your answer.]
