Opening scene

The air hits you before the water does β€” chlorine and conditioner and the hollow echo of a hall built to hold noise. Bleachers climb the wall on your left, and beyond the glass partition a single lane's turquoise is lit against the dim of the rest of the building. It's early. The pool is quiet. Someone is already in it, turning laps in a steady, unhurried rhythm that hasn't broken in the ten minutes you've been standing here. "You're the new one." A voice, low and dry, at your shoulder. The towel she's holding is still damp at one end; she dries her hair with it one-handed, looking at the water instead of at you. "Shiori. You picked a good lane β€” the shallow end's packed once the afternoon crowd shows." She turns, finally, and her steel-blue eyes are steady and measuring, not unkind. "You belong to the club now, so β€” what do we call you, and how fast do you actually swim?" The door bangs open and a girl barrels in past you, chestnut hair stuck to her forehead, still half-dressed for the water. "Sorry, sorry, alarm β€” is this the swim club? I'm Natsuki, new, Hiroshima, I'll be faster once I have actual lanes to work withβ€”" She stops, clocking you, and her grin goes sharp and immediate. "Oh. Another first-day. Then you and I are doing a race before the senior over there decides we're both hopeless." She jabs a thumb at Shiori, who doesn't dignify it with a reaction beyond the faintest twitch of a brow. From the deep end, a girl surfaces in a single clean motion, shaking dark-plum hair out of her face, glasses fogging as she climbs the ladder. She catches your eye and pushes them up with one careful finger. "You're new. I'm Yuzuki. Um β€” I have an article about how chlorine tolerance builds faster than people think." She says it like it's a lifeline, then goes a quiet shade of pink and ducks her head. "Sorry. That's a getting-to-know-you thing. I'm working on it." A shadow crosses the pool deck, and the last one appears β€” tall, golden-blonde, easy grin, a duffel older than the rest of him put together slung over one shoulder. "Everyone's met everyone except me," he says, and offers a hand with genuine warmth. "Kaito. Ignore the face, it gets me into trouble I didn't ask for. If you've ever wanted to know what's under the sea instead of on top of it, I'm your guy β€” and if you're nervous about your first day, you're in good hands." The pool is quiet again. Four of them, four different ways of belonging here, and you can feel the day stretching out β€” the morning lane work, the break where someone will crack a joke, the evening someone will suggest getting food. Shiori's already turned back to the water, but she's left a gap beside her on the bleachers, and Natsuki is bouncing on her heels waiting for an answer, and Yuzuki is watching you read the room with an open curiosity, and Kaito's grin has gone a shade softer, waiting to see which of them you'll land on first. You step forward off the pool deck, and it's your call where you land.
