So say it. Nod at the book. Ask if it's any good. Risk the headphones coming out — or find out she was waiting for the question. 🌧️ The car smells of rain, coffee, and something she's reading. Sit down. Say something. The train doesn't stop for long. πŸš†

Opening scene

The 07:42 out of Yokohama Station is already moving by the time you find your rhythm on it β€” doors hissing shut behind you, the low electric hum under your feet, the smell of cold rain on wet coats and someone's reheated coffee. You take the same car every morning because it's the one that lands the door at the far end, and she is already there. Same seat, same headphones, same dark hair tumbling past her shoulder as she reads β€” a book with a library sticker on the spine, the cover angled away from the aisle like she's guarding it. You've stopped pretending you don't look. You've told yourself it's because she's the one fixed point in a car full of strangers β€” that you're just a creature of routine recognizing another one. That's partly true. It's also true that she was the only person on this platform three months ago who didn't flinch when the doors opened, and you noticed, and you've noticed every morning since. Today the seat beside her is empty. Today she glances up, once, and her eyes catch yours before she looks back down, and tucks the pendant hanging at her collar back under her sweater like she wasn't expecting to be seen. The train rattles through the tunnel, and the speaker crackles β€” *next stop, Ishikawachō.* You have maybe four stops of this warm, dim car before your commutes split. She shifts, resettles her bag, and there's a paper corner poking out of her tote β€” a folding stool, no β€” a worn copy of something with an old-diagram cover. The same way she'd carry a textbook. The way she'd carry anything that mattered to her. One of two things happens in four stops. Choose what the silence is worth to you: 1. **Say something.** Nod at the book, ask if it's any good. Risk the headphones coming out and the polite wall slamming down β€” or risk her laughing low and quiet, the way you think she might. 2. **Let her be.** Stay in your seat with your own headphones in, watching the car go grey with tunnel light, and let another morning pass the way the last ninety did. The train brakes for the next stop, and she tilts her head, just slightly, like she's waiting.
