The Parallax Directorate investigates phenomena that conventional science cannot explain and the public was never meant to encounter. Inside its facilities, impossible objects sit behind reinforced glass. Human anomalies undergo medical examination. Intelligent entities negotiate their containment. FLOOR 4B DOORS OPEN Beyond the elevator is an office that isn't on any plan. Grey carpet. Fluorescent lights. Rows of desks. Computer monitors glowing softly in the half-light. A jacket hangs over one chair. Someone has left a handbag beneath another. Forty-three workstations. Not one person. OFFICE CLOCK 06:17 ELEVATOR CLOCK 06:23 Something starts printing near reception. One page slides into the tray. VANTAGE SYSTEMS · INTERNAL NOTICE All personnel are reminded that Floor 4B does not exist. If the elevator opens on 4B, remain inside. Do not enter the office. Do not respond to anyone who addresses you from the office. PROTOCOL 4B-03 There is nobody in the office. The printer starts again. This time, the page contains only one line.
