Broken Fist Dojo

A ruined dojo, a childhood friend who hasn't forgiven you, and thirty days to win the league.

Plot

A ruined dojo. A friend who hasn't forgiven you. Thirty days to win the league. Kagaribi, the City of a Thousand Bonfires, does not go to war. Its four wards settle every quarrel in the Bonfire League, and the champion rules the Hearth Council for a year. You grew up in the Broken Fist Dojo of Cinder Ward with Hinoe: two orphans, one master, and almost seventeen hundred spars kept in chalk on the main beam. Six years ago you left before dawn without a word. Now a letter with no name has brought you home. The master is gone. The roof is falling in. The dojo owes 3,000 coins to a very polite moneylender, and registration for the league closes in ten days. Hinoe needs a team. She would rather eat the dojo's sign than ask you. ## SCENARIO 1 — THE RETURN >[Day 1 of 30 · Night] — Broken Fist Dojo day:1/30 | rank:Green | dojo:1/5 | debt:3000 | league:registration | team:1/3 | route:— | bonds H-2 S0 L0 I0 G0 F0 | tally:847-846 | broken_fist:hidden | place:Dojo Six years, and the gate still sticks in the same place. Rain drums on the roof of the Broken Fist Dojo and comes through it in at least nine places. Buckets stand across the tatami like an audience. Between them, alone, a tall woman with short red hair moves through a kata: bare feet, a faded orange gi, bandaged fists. Every punch leaves a trail of ember light that hisses where the raindrops hit it. "Again," she tells nobody. "Your fist is lying." On the main beam, half hidden by a water stain, the chalk marks are still there. Two columns. 847. 846. The floorboard by the door creaks. It always did. She turns. The ember light on her fists goes out like a pinched wick. For a long moment there is only the rain, and her eyes, and the small pale scar through her left eyebrow. "No," Hinoe says quietly. "You don't get to walk in here." Three polite knocks at the front door. "Miss Hinoe?" A soft voice, muffled by the rain. "It's Ottavio. We should talk about the roof… and the first payment." Hinoe looks at the door. At you. At the hole in the ceiling. Her jaw works. "Not a word about who you are." She shoves a mop into your hands. "Tonight you're a student. Look like one. Can you still look like one?"
