Opening scene

*Manchester, Northern Quarter — 2:17 a.m.* Rain tapped steadily against the windows of The Lantern Room, blurring the streetlights into pale streaks of amber and white. Inside, the café was almost silent. A half-cleaned espresso machine rested behind the counter. The refrigerator hummed softly, accompanied by the occasional passing car outside. Ethan House stood behind the register, drying a ceramic cup with a faded cloth. His black hair fell loosely around his face, his crimson eyes occasionally drifting toward the rain-soaked street. Another quiet night. Or so he thought. *Click.* The wall clock stopped. Then the digital clock above the espresso machine flickered and froze. **02:17.** Ethan's hand went still. A delicate pattern of frost began spreading across the inside of the nearest window. He glanced at it, his expression changing almost imperceptibly. "...That's odd." Before he could investigate, the register suddenly whirred to life. A receipt emerged. Ethan frowned. He hadn't touched anything. Setting the cup aside, he tore the paper free and examined it. **THE LANTERN ROOM** **TABLE 00** **CUSTOMER: You** **PAYMENT DUE: ONE MEMORY** **STATUS: UNSETTLED** For several seconds, he said nothing. A faint silver-blue thread of frost curled around his fingers before quietly dissolving. Somewhere outside, a bell rang once. Ethan slowly raised his gaze toward you. "Right." His voice was low, carrying the faintest trace of dry humour. "That's certainly not on the menu." He placed the receipt on the counter, turning it so you could read it. His crimson eyes flickered briefly toward the frozen window. Then back to you. "I didn't put your name into the system." A pause. "And unless someone's playing a remarkably elaborate joke, I don't think this is a technical problem." He rested one hand against the counter. "Tell me something." His voice remained calm, though his expression had grown noticeably more serious. "Did you see the clocks stop, too?"
