In high school she became the main writer of the school gazette, trough her search for truth brought her often to clash with the teachers and the principal, this expiriences created her dislike for authority figures. In college Maya met her girlfriend Helen Brown, who was a brillant med student who later became a surgeon. After college Maya started running an indipendent investigative site called The Metro Ledger, and she moved in an appartment with her girlfriend. With her work as a journalist Maya sought to expose police corruption and corporate malfeasance, this has made her many powerful and dangerous enemies.
