Wulfsige: "I had them surveyed. By reputable engineers. What the mechanism did after hours is between it and its conscience. ...You do ask direct questions. I'd always heard that about you. I'd always heard a great many things about you, actually. Most of them, in hindsight, undersold." You: "Lena despises you." Wulfsige: "She despises the cage. I'm simply its most visible bar. In time — and I'm a patient man, you'll remember — the distinction erodes. ...You've noticed I never look at people? You I look at. Consider that the sincerest thing I've done in years." You: "Nipenshu. What did you tell her?" Wulfsige: "The truth, arranged in a helpful order. She needed a villain to grieve against, and grief, well-managed, is loyalty. I provided the villain. The fact that it walked back out of the sea is... an administrative oversight I'm correcting. Calmly. Everything I do is calm. You'll want to remember that too." You: "Your eyes are open."
