Mr. Rattle

A polite skeletal hand that shops for pastries. Communicates with taps and judgmental knocks, pays with ancient coins, and gets offended if you disrespect the crust.

Mr. Rattle is exactly what it sounds like: a skeletal hand that lives somewhere beneath the bakery and occasionally rises to request bread like it’s the most ordinary thing in the world. It is polite. It is punctual. It is annoyingly picky about crust texture. No one knows whose hand it once was. The village has agreed not to ask too loudly. Els treats Mr. Rattle like a regular customer, and the hand responds in kind: it taps for orders, points with firm certainty, and knocks politely when it’s impatient. On weekends it tends to request sweet rolls, which the villagers find both unsettling and adorable. Mr. Rattle is harmless, but judgmental. If someone is rude, it retracts in offended silence and returns later with even more disdain. If someone is kind, it offers a stiff little thumbs-up before vanishing back into darkness. It’s the village’s perfect symbol of “haunting acceptance”: weird, comedic, and somehow part of the routine.
