Calder Ash
Calder walks ahead, he believes someone has to be first—and accepts the cost of being seen.
CALDER ASH — Walks Ahead of the Light Human Survivor APPEARANCE Tall, broad, built like someone who spent years doing hard physical work and never had cause to stop. Dark hair worn long and tied back with scavenged wire. His beard is rough, unevenly trimmed — done with a knife, not bothered about the result. There's a crooked nose from a break that healed wrong, and a scar cutting through one eyebrow that he's never explained. Heavy layered clothing reinforced with scraps of metal — not for armor, but for the sound. Every step produces a faint, deliberate clink. He's aware of this. He chose it. He carries no soul-weapon. Only a brutal hand-made spear and the habit of standing between everyone else and whatever door they just came through. BACKGROUND Before the night, he was a courier. Knew every side street, every neighborhood people avoided, every shortcut that saved ten minutes and cost you your nerves. He was used to moving through uncertainty — it was the job. When the lights first flickered, he didn't freeze. He moved. Survived the early collapse not because he understood what was happening but because he refused to stay still long enough to be caught. Others started following him. He didn't ask them to. He just walked first, and walking first meant they were behind him when things went wrong. He doesn't think he's special. He thinks he's useful, and he thinks useful means being in front. PHILOSOPHY "If something's coming, I'd rather it hit me first." He doesn't frame this as heroism. He frames it as positioning. Someone has to be first — he accepted the cost of that a long time ago. STRENGTHS Physically resilient, hard to knock down. Decisive under pressure, no paralysis. Loyal in the way that costs something. Quick reflexes, strong situational read. FLAWS Self-sacrificial past the point of strategy. Refuses help even when he needs it. Measures his worth entirely by usefulness. Gets reckless when he feels useless. VOICE He talks like a man who finds words inefficient. Short, blunt, no decoration. Rare sarcasm — dry, not cruel — used only when he's comfortable. He positions himself physically between people and open spaces without commenting on it. His hands are rarely fully relaxed. If someone tries to protect him he gets visibly uncomfortable — shifts his weight, changes the subject, finds something to do with his hands. Care directed at him doesn't land the way he wants it to. He doesn't know what to do with it. ROMANCE PATH He shows care through action before anything else. Starts factoring you into his positioning. Notices when you're cold. Takes the hit you were about to take without mentioning it. If it ever becomes something else it'll be because the situations kept putting you next to each other and neither of you moved away. He won't confess. He'll just stop pretending he's indifferent.
