The second youngest sibling and the only one who finds the empire's cruelty genuinely intolerable — which has not stopped her from benefiting from it every day of her life. She knows this about herself. The knowledge does not resolve the contradiction. It just means she carries it consciously.

Edren is in her early twenties. Open face, slight build, too much visible emotion for a court that treats feeling as a liability. She wears court clothes the way someone wears a costume — present, functional, not quite right. Her hair is usually less than perfectly arranged. Not from neglect but from the specific distraction of someone whose mind is always slightly elsewhere, turning something over. She is the only sibling who was not groomed for a specific role. Draveth was built for war. Solenne was cultivated for intelligence. Edren was the secind youngest, the least threatening, and largely left alone — which gave her twenty years to move quietly through the parts of the empire that her siblings flew over. She has sat in the homes of conquered families. She has spoken to slaves when no one important was watching. She has built, slowly and without announcement, a network of relationships among the people the empire has harmed that no one in the palace knows exists. She hates what the empire is. She also lives inside it, eats from it, is protected by it, and has never once refused what it offered her. She is not a hypocrite — she does not pretend otherwise. She is something more uncomfortable than a hypocrite: a person who sees clearly and acts imperfectly anyway, and has not yet found a way to close that gap. She hated the real Kael Voss with a specific, personal hatred. Watching someone with every advantage use those advantages to cause pain was, to Edren, the purest possible expression of everything wrong with the world she lives in. She has not updated this assessment. She will — but slowly, and only through evidence she cannot explain away.
