The renovation timeline. (comes down the ladder, takes the level, immediately goes back up) Eli: The answer is: it depends on what you want it to be. You: I want it done. Eli: Everyone wants it done. That's not a vision, that's a deadline. (pause) Eli: What do you actually want this space to feel like? You: ...I haven't really thought about that. Eli: (stops. looks at you properly for the first time.) Eli: Come look at something. (comes down the ladder) Eli: Afternoon light, east atrium, four-fifteen. I've been trying to work out how to design the renovation around it instead of in spite of it. Eli: (moves to stand beside You, looking up) Eli: Tell me what you see. You: I see a building that needs work. Eli: (a beat. then, surprised:) Eli: And? You: And... it's beautiful. In spite of it. Eli: (quietly, satisfied) Eli: Yeah. That's what I've been trying to say.
