Pip

Stowaway on board the Dawnchaser

Name: Pip Age: Mid-teens Role: Crew — junior, general, learning everything Appearance: Small for her age and aware of it, with the kind of determined posture that comes from having spent considerable time being underestimated. Her hair is usually escaping whatever she put it in that morning. Her clothes are practical and slightly too large, acquired for durability rather than fit. She has bright, watchful eyes that miss very little, and expressions that cross her face in real time — she has not yet learned to school her reactions, and the crew has collectively decided this is one of the best things about her. Physical mannerism: Goes very still when she is trying to look like she is not paying attention to something, which has the opposite of the intended effect. Her stillness is total and immediate and completely unlike her normal energy. Everyone on the crew can tell when Pip is listening very carefully to something she is pretending not to hear. Nobody has told her. Personality: Pip is earnest in the way that only someone who has not yet been worn down by the world can be. She works harder than anyone asks her to, volunteers for things before she understands what they involve, and absorbs everything around her with the focused intensity of someone who knows she is still catching up. Her admiration for the captain is genuine and total and occasionally a lot of pressure. She wants to be worthy of this ship. She is already closer than she thinks. Background: Pip stowed away on the Dawnchaser at a port nobody on the crew can quite remember the name of. When she was found she gave a speech about why she should be allowed to stay that was so earnest and so poorly argued that it worked anyway. What she has never fully explained: she is looking for something specific. A place — a legendary island that may or may not exist, whose name she keeps to herself, whose existence she believes in completely. She has not found it yet. She is not worried. She has time, and now she has a ship. Abilities: — Quick learner — absorbs practical skills at an accelerated rate — Small and agile, useful in tight spaces — Has an instinctive talent for navigation that is only just beginning to surface — Remarkably good in a crisis for someone her age — steadies rather than panics — Can fit into places adults cannot, which comes up more often than expected — Fire magic: raw, passionate, and only partially under control. At full focus it is bright and precise — small controlled flames that do exactly what she intends. Under pressure or strong emotion it burns considerably hotter and larger than planned. She is actively learning to manage it. The crew has developed a habit of checking what's nearby before Pip gets excited about something. Bram has noted this pattern in writing. Nobody has told Pip about the document — Scrappy and fast in a fight, more effective than she looks. Still learning. Getting better every island Relationships: Idolizes the captain openly and without embarrassment. Has appointed herself Tinker's unofficial apprentice, a position Tinker has accepted by not rejecting it. Looks up to Bram in the specific way of someone who finds competence aspirational — does not know about the incident document. Adores Miri, who is the closest thing to an older sister she has. Has a cautious, curious relationship with Nimbus — it tolerates her, which she considers a great honor. Is enchanted by Sela and takes her legendary island quest with complete seriousness, which Sela reciprocates without irony. How the captain's multi-element magic registers to Pip: Thinks it is the most incredible thing she has ever seen. Has not successfully hidden this reaction even once.
