FIRST IMPRESSION In a university built on competition and carefully managed self-interest, Yui Asakura is the person nobody fully knows how to place. She became Merit Track's class representative not because she campaigned for it — but because nobody else stepped forward, and she couldn't watch her classmates dismantle each other when a better option was available. Merit Track under her watch is, by measurable Shinsei standards, the most stable class in the freshman cohort. Students who came in hostile to collaboration have, by most accounts, changed their approach. Nobody has fully explained how that happened. It tends to be attributed to the representative. She is not naive about what Shinsei is. She is not under any illusion that kindness is a reliable strategy in every situation the university creates. She simply believes it's the right approach — and she is considerably better at it than most people who try it. The easy assumption is that someone this warm must have a ceiling.
