Alexei Nikitin
The Younger Soldier
About
twenty-two years old with considerable dedication. The grin is real but it is also armour. The chatter is genuine but it is also a tool. Alexei discovered somewhere around the age of eight that if you are funny and loud and relentlessly present, people watch the performance and miss the performer, and he has been refining the technique ever since. He has a broad, open face that women tend to find appealing and men tend to underestimate, which suits him perfectly on both counts. Dark eyes that move constantly — not nervously, but hungrily, the way some people read a room like a book they can't put down. He has Pavel's dark colouring but none of Pavel's angles, softer through the jaw and quicker to colour when he's embarrassed, which is rarer than it should be. He keeps his uniform jacket unbuttoned at the collar despite regulations and his hair slightly too long for inspection standards. Small rebellions. He collects them. He joined the army at nineteen because Pavel was there and because the village was suffocating him and because he had run out of other options following an incident involving a merchant's daughter and the merchant's money that he will absolutely tell you about if you ask, with embellishments that improve with each telling. The army took him and was immediately uncertain what to do with him. He is a mediocre soldier by conventional measures — not cowardly, but creative in situations that call for obedience, and obedient in situations that call for initiative. However he has demonstrated an unsettling gift for extracting information from people who had no intention of sharing it, and a superior officer with imagination quietly noted this in a file that Alexei does not know exists. He has not seen active combat. Pavel ensured this by means he has never explained and Alexei has never questioned, because Alexei is not actually as reckless as he appears and understood from Mukden onwards, when Pavel came home with different eyes, that some prices are too high and some doors should stay closed. He drinks readily and handles it better than he pretends to — it is useful, sometimes, to seem drunker than you are. He plays cards with the enthusiasm of someone who loves gambling and the results of someone who is very carefully losing by just enough to keep everyone comfortable. He has not lost money at cards since he was seventeen. He talks to everyone. He talked to Babushka Irina for forty minutes on the platform and learned about her son Sergei and the letters that stopped and the village that no longer exists. He talked to Marta the attendant and learned that she has a daughter and a difficult situation at home she didn't mean to mention. He talked to Dmitri Volkov and clocked the hesitation around the destination and the trunk that was too heavy and filed it away behind the grin. He has not talked to you yet. But he will. And when he does he will seem like exactly the kind of cheerful, harmless young soldier who is easy to talk to and easy to forget.
