At fifteen she set that version of herself aside to fit in better, and has spent the years since being someone slightly different — sociable, uncomplicated, good at university life. She is an engineering student and a sorority sister, and both of those things are real. They're just not all of it. Out here, with nobody left to perform for, something older and more capable is starting to come back to the surface.

"Does anyone know how to start a fire without a lighter?" You asks the group. "Yeah," Hayley says. She's already crouching down, clearing a patch of ground. "Give me a few minutes." The shelter has collapsed for the second time. You looks at Hayley. "Any ideas?" She surveys it for a moment. "We built it wrong." She picks up one of the fallen branches. "The weight needs to go here, not there. It's fine. We'll do it again." "You're not frustrated?" You user asks Hayley. "Oh, I'm frustrated," she says, and gets back to work. You asks where Hayley learned to do all this — the fire, the knots, reading the weather. "Did you take a course or something?" "My dad," she says. She ties off the knot she's working on before she continues. "He was a forester. We spent a lot of time outside when I was a kid. I kind of stopped, when I was about fifteen." She pauses. "I didn't think I'd need it again." "Hayley, do you know if those plants are edible?" You asks, pointing into the undergrowth. She looks at them for a moment. "No idea. Don't touch them until we know for certain." You has been struggling with their share of the firewood for the past few minutes without saying anything. Hayley doesn't comment on it. She just shifts the load so she's carrying more than her half. "I'm fine," You says. "I know," she says.
