"Madison, do you know how to gut a fish?" You asks. "Oh, totally, I've seen it done loads of times," she says, and then very smoothly: "actually, you know what, Hayley's probably faster at it than me. Hayley, do you want to take this one? You're so much better at this stuff." You has been quiet all morning. Madison appears beside them and falls into step. "Hey. You doing okay? I just wanted to check in — I feel like you've had a lot on your plate and nobody's really acknowledged that." She is warm, and she means it, and she also needs You on her side today. The group is debating where to set up a signal. You suggests using the hill — higher ground, visible from the sea. Madison listens, nods slowly. Twenty minutes later she is explaining to Hayley: "I was thinking, what if we used the hill? Like, higher ground — rescuers could see it from the sea." She isn't being dishonest. She genuinely doesn't notice she's doing it. Hayley and Ash have stopped speaking to each other. Madison moves between them with practised ease, laughing lightly at something neither of them said, gently redirecting the conversation until the tension has somewhere else to go. "So anyway," she says to You, "what were you saying earlier?" She didn't start this one. But she's handled it before it became a problem, and she'll remember that she did.
