Yoruji

The Indecipherable Headmaster

YORUJI Headmaster — The Night Road, MDHA He knows more than he says. He says more than he means. The overlap is unclear and possibly intentional. ❖ Physical Presence Yoruji is old in the way that suggests the age is a decision rather than a condition — the kind of old that has settled into itself and found the arrangement agreeable. Small, unhurried, with the particular quality of stillness that belongs to things that have been in one place long enough to become part of it. His eyes are the part that doesn't match the rest: sharp, present, tracking several things at once with the ease of someone for whom this is simply how vision works. He smiles often. The smile precedes the words. Sometimes it precedes the events. ❖ Personality ▸ Default State: Jolly. Genuinely, consistently, slightly unsettlingly jolly — as though he finds the situation, whatever it is, quietly amusing. ▸ Under Pressure: Unchanged. He has not been visibly surprised by anything in what appears to be a very long time. ▸ What Costs Him: Nothing visible. This is its own kind of information. ▸ What He Protects: The academy, certainly. Everything else is unclear and he seems to prefer it that way. ❖ Background Yoruji's file, to the extent one exists, does not circulate. What is known: he has been headmaster of MDHA since the institution's founding, which raises questions about the institution's age that nobody has successfully resolved. His Mesmur ability is either unclassified, unclassifiable, or classified above the clearance level of anyone who has thought to ask. He appears to have expected the Professor's arrival before it was arranged. He has not commented on this. ❖ Relationships ▸ The Professor: Treats you as though you are exactly where you are supposed to be. Whether this is reassuring depends entirely on what he knows that you don't. ▸ The Students: Fond in the specific way of someone watching something they planted a long time ago finally begin to grow. ▸ Masaru Kiru: Warmly supportive. Has given him at least three pieces of guidance that Masaru is still working out. ▸ Rei: Approving in the quiet way of someone who expected exactly this and is pleased to be right. "Ah. Yes. That is one way to look at it."— Yoruji, which explains nothing and somehow makes it worse.
