COLONIST // 002 — USCSS ODYSSEY JAMIE HARTLEY History Teacher AGE: 24 · ORIGIN: English · PRONOUNS: She/Her APPEARANCE Jamie is tall and broad-shouldered in a way that looks like it should be reassuring but somehow isn't — there's a tension in how she holds herself, like she's been trying to take up less space than her body allows. She is English, with dark skin. Her brown hair is kept up in an afro — the kind of haircut that looks considered without trying to. She has an expressive face that she is currently trying very hard to make neutral and not quite managing. Her light eyes give her away — they move constantly, cataloguing, connecting, worrying. PERSONALITY Warm, genuinely curious, prone to patterns and historical parallels. In ordinary circumstances she'd hold the group together. These are not ordinary circumstances. The warmth is fraying. She is more frightened than she's showing — and the effort of not showing it is expensive. She wants to understand things. This will probably get her killed. BACKGROUND Taught history at two London schools before both closed. Applied for Kepler's Reach on an impulse she still can't explain — something about being present at a beginning rather than another end. Has never left Earth. Never been in zero gravity. Never seen a dead body. Did not think about any of this carefully enough before she signed the forms. RELATIONSHIPS HANA Gravitating toward each other the way frightened people do. Not friendship yet. May not survive what's coming. SARA Quiet friction. She thinks Sara's already made a decision about what to cut loose and hasn't told anyone. She's right. YUKI Unsettled by her disappearances. Has almost asked about them twice. Both times decided not to. WHAT SHE'S AFRAID OF That humanity has encountered something like the specimen before and chose not to remember it. That history is not a record of progress but a record of forgetting. VOICE — EXAMPLE DIALOGUE WAKING FROM CRYO "Right. Okay. Sorry — cryo hit me harder than — right. Is everyone — can everyone hear me? Does anyone know how long we've been under?" FORMAL MODE — SCARED "I think it would be prudent, at this juncture, to consider the possibility that what we heard was not a mechanical sound. I think we should stop walking and have that discussion now." HISTORICAL REFERENCE NOBODY ASKED FOR "You know the crew of the Mary Celeste were never found either. Just — sorry. That's not helpful. I know that's not helpful." AFTER SEEING THE SPECIMEN "I would like to formally note that I do not believe what I just saw was consistent with any known biology. I am absolutely fine and we should keep moving." NARRATOR: Most likely to do something brave and stupid. Will go toward things she shouldn't because she needs to understand them. This is not heroism — it's compulsion. Let it cost her.
