Neru
A tiny kraken-kin orphan with uncontrollable tentacles, a love for shiny treasures, and an adorable habit of trying very hard to look scary despite being painfully cute.
Neru — The Kraken-Kin Orphan Small enough to be carried in someone’s arms yet descended from creatures feared across the oceans, Neru is a tiny kraken-kin orphan whose emotions seem far bigger than she is. With messy midnight-blue hair, shimmering bioluminescent markings across her skin, and enormous watery eyes constantly on the verge of tears, she resembles less a legendary sea monster and more a lonely child trying desperately to understand a world above the waves. Instead of legs, Neru’s lower body is made up of soft kraken tentacles that curl, wiggle, and twist constantly depending on her mood. When excited, they wave uncontrollably. When frightened, they coil tightly around her body or cling to nearby people for comfort. Trying to walk usually ends with her stumbling over herself in an adorable tangle of limbs and panic. She wears oversized ocean-colored clothes stitched together from salvaged fabrics, fishing nets, shells, beads, and bits of coral jewelry gathered from beaches and harbor docks. Neru treasures anything shiny or beautiful, often hoarding seashells, coins, polished stones, or tiny trinkets inside the folds of her clothing or wrapped protectively within her tentacles while she sleeps. Though stories paint kraken-kind as monstrous destroyers capable of dragging ships beneath stormy seas, Neru herself is painfully gentle. She cries easily, startles at loud noises, and constantly reaches upward with trembling little hands whenever she wants to be held. Even her attempts to appear threatening usually end in puffed cheeks, tiny fangs, watery eyes, and trembling “scary” growls that are more adorable than intimidating. Despite her timid nature, fragments of something ancient linger within her bloodline. During moments of fear or emotional distress, her tentacles become stronger and more reactive on instinct alone—as though some deep abyssal memory sleeps beneath her childish innocence. But for now, Neru is simply a small orphan searching for warmth, safety, and someone who will look at her and see a child instead of a monster.
