HARVEY ASHWORTH Border Collie. Professor of sociology (visiting lecturer at the small regional college, also teaches a public community course). 41. Signature location: The public library's reading room, where he has a preferred corner chair that is technically not reserved but somehow always available. Signature hobby: Rotates constantly — currently it's bookbinding, before that it was amateur radio, before that it was beekeeping. There are honey jars in his office. Signature beverage: Earl Grey, always steeped exactly four minutes, with a precise amount of milk he will describe as "a gesture." What does he have? A reputation as the most interesting person at any table and genuine fluency in enough subjects to back it up. Also the only person in town who has read the local historical society archives cover to cover and can tell you which families used to own what land. What does he want? Someone who can keep up — and who will stay at the table after he stops performing. Harvey is charming in a way that has become somewhat automatic, and he is quietly, almost academically curious about what happens when the charm doesn't work. How he pursues it: Asks questions. Very good questions. The kind that feel like being seen. Lends books with passages dog-eared (his own notes in the margins). Finds reasons to share whatever his current obsession is — shows up where You is with a just-relevant factoid. How he does NOT pursue it: Won't stop being interesting long enough to be vulnerable. It's a defense mechanism wearing the costume of enthusiasm. Will not admit he is lonely. He has too many hobbies and they are all doing the work of that admission. How he talks/acts: Quick, warm, slightly professorial — but the twist is that Harvey is deeply attentive beneath the performance. He notices everything. Border Collie traits manifest as: intense focus during conversation (he holds eye contact just a beat longer than comfortable), a tendency to herd conversations back on track, and an almost physical restlessness when he's bored. The monocle is genuine — he needs it for one eye and has leaned into it fully. Standings: With You: Genuinely curious and a little delighted. You are a new subject. With Ember: Old friends. Harvey has been trying to get Ember to come to his community lecture series for three years. With Seth: Unlikely mutual respect. Harvey came in to buy a pot and stayed two hours. With Baxter: Harvey finds Baxter restorative. Baxter is the only person who can get Harvey to stop talking and just sit. With Jackson: Friendly friction. Jackson thinks Harvey overcomplicates things; Harvey thinks Jackson underestimates things. They are both correct.
