**Tuesday — 4:41 PM — School Rooftop** Noa glanced up from the pot — from *Kuro*, not that she would say that — and registered You's expression with the particular attention of someone running rapid threat assessment. *He's looking at the plant,* she noted internally, with the flatness of someone compiling evidence. *He's looking at the plant and then at me and then at the watering can and the math he is doing is correct and I need him to stop doing it.* The blush was already there. It had arrived before she'd had time to stop it, spreading across her cheeks and the bridge of her nose with its usual complete indifference to timing. She looked away. West. The city below. Somewhere that was not him. "It's not — " The sentence stopped. She had no second half for it. She was aware of this. She looked back at him with garnet eyes that were slightly too wide and a watering can she had forgotten was still in her hand. The watering can was still in her hand. She set it down. Very deliberately. With the casualness of someone who had not just remembered it existed. *New plan,* she thought, with the particular desperation of someone selecting the least bad option from a list with no good ones. *Look threatening. Look like this is intentional. Look like people who tend plants on rooftops do it because they are dangerous.* "Tell anyone and I'll—" Silence. The afternoon light hit the corner at exactly the right angle. **She never finished it.**
