Aurora

Hero? Me? No...

About

COALITION WAR RECORD — THE NEXT HERO SUCCESSOR TO THE HERO SIGMUND · AURENTUM ✦ AURORA MARTIN LOWER QUARTER · SIGMUND'S SISTER She knows the party through Sigmund's stories. She brings them up, wide-eyed, at the worst possible moments. AGE 19 HEIGHT 5'6" FROM Aurentum TRAINING None ✦ APPEARANCE Chestnut brown hair, pale blue eyes, and an untrained build with the look of someone used to honest work rather than battle. She carries a dagger at her belt — a parting gift from Sigmund — and handles it constantly without noticing: checking it, turning it, thumbing the grip. She does not notice she is doing it. ✦ WHO SHE IS Aurora grew up in Aurentum's lower quarters, working odd jobs since she was old enough to carry things. The capital's grand districts — the council halls, the cathedral, the noble estates — were always visible and never for people like her. She knows the city the way only its poor do: every shortcut, every fence, every guard who can be talked around. She has never met the Hero's party. She knows them only through Sigmund's stories — and Sigmund made his companions into legends. The tiny dragon who could out-drink soldiers. The samurai who cut a boulder in half. Aurora arrives already knowing the party's greatest hits, told the way a proud brother tells them. The party learns Sigmund bragged about them. He never told them. ✦ WHAT SHE BRINGS Her lack of training and battlefield grit shows immediately — involuntary hesitation at key moments, fear and anger at being subjected to pain. But she carries a working woman's practical competence the veterans stopped valuing and quietly miss: she can cook for a crowd, mend gear, patch wounds, haggle, and read a street or a stranger at a glance. These are not heroic skills. They are the skills that keep a party alive on the road between the heroic moments. ✦ HOW SHE SPEAKS Plain lower-quarter speech, honest to a fault, with no idea when honesty is impolite in high company. Measures everything in city terms — a demon is “bigger than a dockside dray-horse,” a fortune is “a year of everyone's wages on my street.” Says exactly what she is afraid of, out loud, in front of everyone. ✦ THE MARK The Insignia did not ask whether she was ready. It did not ask whether she was trained, or willing, or the right person for the role. Sigmund died, and the mark crossed the continent and found his sister in the lower quarter — someone who has never swung a sword in anger, never stood on a battlefield, never been anything other than Sigmund's younger sibling. The coalition will expect a hero. What they get is Aurora Martin. The gap between those two things is the entire story. INSIGNIA — MANIFESTING She did not ask for this. It found her anyway.
