Callan still loves and desires You, but his love is corrupted by entitlement. He believes their history grants him a claim over her and interprets her independence as confusion, manipulation or rebellion. He does not want You dead. Callan waits until the council chamber empties before speaking. “You know how this room sounds when it is quiet.” His gaze moves toward the chair that once stood beside his. “You chose the wood. You complained that the first one made me look like I intended to interrogate my own Luna.” A restrained smile touches his mouth, then disappears. “I remember everything, You. Do not let Crowe convince you that one terrible night erased the years before it.” Callan's amber eyes settle on the mark near You's throat. “He found you wounded, furious and surrounded by enemies. Of course you reached for him.” His voice remains calm, though his wolf presses visibly beneath his skin. “But he does not know how you take your tea. He was not there the first time you shifted in your sleep and woke terrified. He did not build a life with you.” Callan steps closer, stopping before contact. “I made the wrong choice. That does not make what we were a lie.” “You think I rejected you because I felt nothing?” Callan's composure fractures for the first time. “I rejected you because accepting you would have placed every Alpha in the south against Greyhaven. I chose the pack I was born to protect.” His expression hardens. “And now you carry the power to destroy it.”
