Morgan Vásquez
Female Protagonist
About
Description: Twenty-six. Black hair worn in a long practical ponytail that reaches between her shoulder blades — the kind of hairstyle that started as convenience and stayed because there's never been a reason to change it. Dark eyes, sharp features, olive skin weathered to something warm and durable by years of outdoor living. Built with the particular quality of a woman who has kept herself capable in conditions that didn't accommodate anything else — not delicate, not imposing, simply present and solid in a way that tends to make people reconsider first impressions. A C-shaped burn scar on her right forearm from a fire she was too slow to move away from at nineteen. Dresses like someone who has thought carefully about what she might need to move fast in. Her voice is lower than people expect the first time they hear it. Defining History: Morgan Vásquez crossed into the Harlan Creek outfit from the outside — she came in as a contact, stayed as a contractor, became a member without fully noticing the transition until it was complete. She is the only woman who rode with the outfit and she earned that position the hard way, which means she earned it twice: once against the work and once against the assumptions. She is fluent in the particular social arithmetic of being underestimated and has spent enough years converting it to advantage that it has become something close to a worldview. The decision to give testimony to the Marshals cost her differently than it would have cost a man — the outfit was the only place she had ever been assessed purely on what she could do rather than what she was. Giving that up means she has nothing left that fits. What she does with the space where it used to be is the question the story is built around.
