The Orryphene evolved aboard Eidolon Root, a shattered worldship whose interior became an enormous self-sustaining forest. Each Orryphene colony can grow thousands of lesser bodies, but only a few develop complete independent consciousness. These rare individuals are called Walking Gardens and serve as explorers, diplomats, memory collectors, and protectors. The Dominion initially mistook the Orryphene for valuable terraforming organisms.
